East Cape 17 Evo V

Had some other build threads, but I am now delivered. Up to 5 hours, and over babying this during the break in. The all important YouTube video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYTNeSP2j3I

This is a fantastic skiff so far. I am 100% impressed both by the build experience, components and the running characteristics of the boat so far. In this price range, I’m not sure anything can touch this thing.

My first impressions and some build notes for others considering a build (which you should):

  • Hull runs skinny and dry. My first day, staying below 3k, it was blowing and rolling pretty good. Yup, got a little wet but with the break-in required, it was extremely comfortable for what was needed to get done that day in those conditions. Running 4k in slightly better conditions the next day was a dream. Waiting for that “flat” day…
  • Super glad I did the upgrade on the switches - Bluewater labeled and lighted in the glove box. 100% worth it. Also, with Suzuki, you can move everything besides for the kill switch to the glove box - I really like this as well - kept it clean.
  • I am glad I had the console cut down 2" - very comfortable and less drag/weight. If I did it again, I would really consider having them cut it down further if possible…I’m short.
  • Extra large and double thick cushion is worth it. I’m glad they directed me this was and to skip the backrest or step. Its very comfy and easy to walk around without stepping on the vinyl.
  • The jump seat, yes it adds some weight, but my wife and dog both love it. With two people, every one is on the center line and I don’t need to worry about the cooler getting jacked/hauling it. Would do it again unless I was sure that I was either : (i) running solo 80% of the time or (ii) only fishing with one other hardened person.
  • Adam didn’t mention that I added the pressurized/insulated upgrade to the livewell. I think either cut it out, or do the upgrade. The in between wouldn’t feel functional.
  • The bottom set of rod holders is a little tight…3k spinners were ok down there, but if you intend to put something larger down there or use them a lot, you really need to sea-dek the entire under gunnel for the horizontal space (I only did the reel pads).

Overall, I’m extremely pleased. Will add some more in the next weeks as I put some more hours on this. Thanks to everyone here who guided me on the process, told me what not to do and shared the bare necessities.

I may have seen your boat at the Charleston Boat Show earlier this year? If so I may or may not have left a banana onboard… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Just kidding. If it was the one at the Charleston Boat Show, sweet ride!

Not me…she just arrived two weeks ago…remains banana free!

For those of us who don’t know, can you compare your boat to a 17 HPXV? I think it is 16’9" and I’m not sure what the deadrise is. Does your boat fit into a different niche?

Thanks for sharing. She’s a beauty. M

Competitors for sure. I haven’t been on the 17 Maverick in a long time, so I can’t comment too much. 2 extra degrees of deadrise on the East Cape. Length about the same.

I also own a Pathfinder so similar build to Maverick via parent, and I can tell you the EC build quality/finish is substantially better than the Pathy. From glass work to electrical.

Others here can chime in better than I can on this one.

Congrats on the new ride @greentide

You have the best of both worlds with the Pathfinder and now the Evo V. What’s the next addition to the fleet, a 70 Jarrett Bay or 72 Viking?

Have fun with the christening!

I already have more than I deserve. I wanted a skiff since I first saw Walkers Cay as a poor land locked kid. The 17 Evo is my dream boat so I’m good here.

But if I had to pick a bigger sled it would be a Valhalla 37. Lotto better deliver for that one.

Any mods/changes etc to dialing in the prop??

I’m still working on it. I’m running the Suzuki 3 11.75x17p

It’s a great prop and is probably perfect with a jack plate. I don’t have a jack plate. I’m fooling with the mount height to get it dialed in.

It’s really fast but the hole shot is suffering and my rpm’s are low.

I’m betting the 16p is the all around champ.

I’m still breaking in…but we should start a thread on props and set up for the 17 Evo. I know Jeff dialed in a bunch too.

Boat pictures?

Congratulations on the new ride! I came really close to pulling the trigger on the 17—it performed incredibly when I tested it out. I ended up sticking with the 18 since I often take my wife and kids with me and needed the extra space. Looking forward to seeing yours in action!

Pup loves the rig - under the casting platform is his spot.

I did some test runs this weekend. 3/4 tank, two people, light gear. I have the CC with jumper and no jack plate. Hole #1 with Suzuki 3 11.75 x 16.

4600 - 27mph
5000 -30.5mph
5200 - 32mph

I was having trouble pushing past 5500 but I’m still learning how to trim/tab this out. Might be me. Also only at 10hrs so was being gentle on wide open and only tried twice.

Different boat, but my zuke 60 on my mosquito won’t go past 5500 unless I trim it to where it makes no sense.

I spoke with Jack Foreman about it at length one time at his shop. I can get my mosquito to 34 with his 3 blade skinny water prop, get it up in 10-12 inches, and run in less with Mac’s Low Water Pickup. So what’s the point of chasing another 500 rpms?

I think that engine has a tough time spinning those 3 blade props faster. If it does what you want, then who cares? If you’re chasing speed - which I think might be a better setup on that East Cape anyways then by all means go crazy. But I think you can get more performance dialing in other factors.

Raise the motor up one hole.

I’m in the low 40’s with the 17p but I had to raise my motor to get over 5000rpms.

@greentide - stunning boat and really nicely built out! I am very envious of the stick it anchor pin storage - I need one of those!

Don’t be scared to lift that outboard…you’ll rarely see me advising to drop one.
