I know these threads popped up from time to time… and it’s that time for me. I need to get new reading glasses and while I’m at it my fav Costa’s Reeftons the arm snapped. I have a claim open with Costa but confidence is low for an agreeable customer service experience based on what I’ve read.
Anyhoo…
I’m thinking of getting prescription sunglasses, I’ve seen a few discount brands, Shady Rays etc. Thoughts?
Clip ons! Been through 10s of 10s of sunglasses. Break, overboard, crushed, but I’ve never lost, broken or lost my prescription glasses
It’s a mental thing from childhood. “You break those glasses, Im gonna break your …..”
It worked
I had Maui Jim and they were $$$$ but awesome. My son has a pair of Smiths that they were running a promotion so we got them at a very reasonable price.
Shady Rays For fishing? I dont think you will like the quality of the polarization. I have several pair, and no longer use for fishing. Ok for driving and wearing around.
My 2 cents.
I recently got a set of progressive Bajio’s. Perfect wrap around my eyes. Not cheap but considerably less than others. The guy that started Bajio’s used to be with Costa.
I hope Costa comes through with the repair/replacement you need. I tried the static cling magnifiers that you can trim and fit onto your sunglasses, gives them a bifocal type feel.
If you are going with a set prescription in a sunglass frame, be sure and check the warranty. Costa would not warranty their frames with aftermarket lenses several years ago. You could get the lenses from Costa but were way more expensive, but you would have a warranty.
Smith fan here. MY Rx Blackfins need new nose pads. Contacted Smith and they said they don’t warranty Rx glasses other than nosepads etc. They didn’t have those nose pads in stock so they gave me a %35 off code on a new pair of Rx glasses. I have a new prescription so I will order soon.
I lost one pair of my 18-year old Maui Jim’s, and looked for a replacement pair that was not $250 or more. Tried the Shady Ray’s, but the plastic lenses didn’t survive long. I found Bini glasses from Italy, and tried them. They’re marketed in the US as B.N.U.S.They have polarized glass lenses from Corning, and the optics are as good as my Maui’s. I got the bronze tint, with green reflective coating. Shopping online, I found what I wanted thru WalMart, who mailed them to my home. Cost: $58 plus tax. I’ve had them over a month, and they seem equal to my Maui’s, but I can buy five pais of Bini’s for what Maui’s cost. Will they last 18 years? Probably not, but I’ll order more. TexasJim
Another Smith guy here. Decided a few years ago I was done with Costa. Looks like they’ve upped their warranty on Rx glasses to two years now, but it used by one year, which, with Blackfins, was pretty worthless since the rubber falls off every 6 to 9 months.
I’ve had Maui Jims in the past, which I liked a lot, and my wife has Bajio Rx, which she loves. But holy $$$!
My Rx Smith Guide’s Choice came in at a $330, a little more than Shady Rays and a lot less that Maui Jim/Bajio/Costa for what I consider similar quality. I’ve had them for three years now, replaced once for free even though the hinge damage was my fault and I told them so. Only thing that irritates me is the integrated leash corrodes away and breaks every year or so. A replacement is $12, which is fine, but the shipping is $15, which annoys me probably more than it should.
Shady Rays is kind of like Frontier Airlines — looks cheap at first glance, but once you add all the crap that’s included with other companies they’re not that much less.
You have the tech to fix that, I drilled a small hole on both side with a dremel bit and inserted a steel wire the epoxy and shrink wrap over the bond. Use piano steel wire very small gauge.
Not sure about all their frame styles, but the Maui Jim frames I have personally owned have had a wire core in the temples. The wire core makes them extremely durable and allows you to have them adjusted for a more comfortable fit.
True story. I have some Smith Moguls with whatever they call their glass lenses. Got them in 2007 and they’ve been all over the Rockies, to Florida a few times, all up and down the Texas coast, Hawaii etc etc. Lenses are still perfect but they got retired a while back because I need Rx now.
I would like a pair with magnifying glass(bifocal🤔) built into the bottom 1/4 so I don’t have to change glasses when tying a leader or putting a fly on with 10 to 12 pound tippet. I can do it without glasses but glasses sure do make it a whole lot easier.
