I’ve got a Ramlin that’s about 8 months old. I pulled the side bunks off the other day after reading this thread. Sure enough, there was a little corrosion starting. Nothing that can’t be remedied at this point with a little sanding. I have decided to replace the wood with HDPE 2x4 off of Amazon. It sure gets expensive when you go to the 2x4 size. A 6ft piece is around 80$. I’ll wrap with some black outdoor waterproof carpet.
Do you think I should leave the area that is sitting up against the aluminum un carpeted? @m32825 said he didn’t think the carpet and moisture would be a problem without the copper in the wood. Where are we on that?
How long are your side bunks? Will the single 6-foot 2X4 work for both?
Since they are more for guiding than structural, I wonder if the composite/HDPE dock/deck planks would work for this purpose?
I’ve always left gaps at the bottom of bunks that I’ve replaced to allow drainage/drying. So leaving the area butting up against the aluminum is probably a prudent move.
18” in length and 2” x 6” although I think a 2 x 4 would be fine. The are simply guide rails to get the boat on the bottom bunks and from bouncing around while trailering.
6ft is more than enough to do both but now I have to measure. I was convinced mine were a 2x4 and @coconutgroves is saying his are 2x6. Yep, 2x6. Oh well. I guess a 2x4 size will probably work. I don’t think the bracket is more than 3 1/2 inches tall.
Ok. Thanks. Since I already screwed up and ordered the 2x4, I’m going to put the 2x4 on see how it looks. I can always order the 2x6 if I don’t like it.
