I’m looking for a little guidance on broadening my horizons and stepping out of my comfort zone, so to speak. I’ve been fishing the Glades since I was a teenager and, truth be told, I never really had much desire to fish anywhere else.
Fast forward to now — I moved from South Florida to Central Florida a few years ago. Even though I’m about two hours north of where I used to live, I’m only about 25 miles further from Chokoloskee.
It just occurred to me (and no, I’ve never been accused of being the sharpest hook in the box) that I’m only 50 miles from Charlotte Harbor. I haven’t been there since the ’90s, back when I fished around Pine Island.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good place to launch — preferably on the south side of the Peace River? Also, are there any areas I should steer clear of?
Thanks in advance — I’m excited to explore some new water.
@Flatscapt If you are looking to cover the north end of Charlotte Harbor near Punta Gorda, I would recommend the ramp at Ponce Deleone (Sp?) Park on Marion Street. Nice access to canal/Mangrove fishing as well as the North West section of Charlotte Harbor and the mouth of the Peace.
That is an area that I have fished only a couple of times but the facility is very good.
I think there is another ramp off aligator creek (another section of PGI. but have never done that.
I’d like to launch from the north end and explore everything by boat. I saw the Ponce ramp, which is on my list. I also came across the Laishley Park Boat Ramp — is that a good option, or a no-go? It looks pretty big from what I can tell on Google.
My aunt and uncle lived in Punta Gorda for 30+ years. They were transplants from Massachusetts. I haven’t been there in ages. I used to sail with my uncle. How is the fishing there?
