Fuel?

I have been using REC90 for years now. But am suspect on where some of this stuff comes from. And I highly doubt it has much detergents in it than required by law. So I was thinking about potential for carbon build up on my valves. So I started looking into some fuel additives. Was even pondering if during high use times if getting premium with Techron and adding Stabil to deal with ethanol issues be better. And just using nonethanol with Stabil during slow usage periods.

What are you guys opinions?

I’ve used Techron in the past and Yama Lube. I don’t use any additives as a routine these days and have not noticed a difference. I do fill up with non-ethanol fuel as much as possible. I use Stabil if I can’t use the boat for a while, but not if I’m regularly running gas in and out of it. I fill with premium as much as possible. Also, as much as possible, I seek out high volume stations as I guess they cycle their gas most often. My spark plugs look fine every time I check.

I’m not running a overly rich two smoker with half fouled plugs
LOL

I always heard that was good stuff from way back

I only run non-ethanol in the skiff (gas tools, too). Every so often I’ll add some of the Mercury gas treatment to the tank.

I have been running whatever 10% ethanol gas I can get for the last 20 years and never had a problem related to it. My motors have been a 1999 Yamaha 25 2 stroke, a 2013 Tohatsu 40 TLDI, and now a 2020 Tohatsu 50 4 Stroke.

In my old two stroke I always un-hooked the gas line and ran the carbs dry while I was flushing the motor, but on the newer fuel injected ones I haven’t ever done anything special and never had a problem.

I hope that one day there are batteries with a higher energy density than gas. Would love nothing more than to get rid of the fuel, oil, and maintenance of an outboard.

I run Rec 90 from one of two stations that I trust. I also add Berrymans every 3-4 fill ups. Im no mechanic but people i trust tell me thats a good route.

I’ve run ethanol-free for so long in all my skiffs that I know if I changed to E10 and something happened I would immediately regret it, so I stay the course. Mainly for my sanity. HA

So should we add some Techtron every hundred hours?

Works just as well in 4 strokes keeping carbon build up off the valves and ring lands. An oz to 10gallons fuel is all that’s needed and I’ve seen the results.

I think Ring Free, Techron and Quicksilver Quick Kleen is all the same stuff. Maybe different concentrations. I think the important thing is to use a quality product and stay clear of snake oils.

Due to availability I run both ethanol and non ethanol gas in my outboard with no issues. I keep the tank topped off and fire it up once every week or two if I get too busy to go fish.

Fuel additives other than Yamaha Ring Free are snake oil as far as I’m concerned.

I use non ethanol mostly but sometimes it’s either not available or not convenient. Try to use the boat twice a month or more but if I go more than a month I’ll crank it for a while in the driveway. Only had to do that a couple times so far.

Yamaha Ring Free every tank :+1::cowboy_hat_face: i had to have my 25 cleand a couple times from sitting not getting ran because it was my back up motor on my 2220 Keywest, the second time the Technician told me about RingFree i haven’t needed that motor cleaned since, i use it in every boat tank now good stuff…it say 1 oz per 10 gallons i put a touch more usually it doesnt hurt …

Buy your Rec-90 from a station that is Top Tier…top tier is the certification that there is a good level of detergent in the gas: TOP TIER™ Gasoline Brands - TOP TIER™

I’ve been told if station is top tier, the detergents have to be in every single type of fuel they pump.

I also dump in Yamaha ring free every other tank.

I never knew about top tier fuels until last year end as much as I don’t believe in snake oils I do believe in top tier fuels. When I bought an older Jeep Wrangler last year it had a little bobble at idle, I decided to buy gas only at my local Exxon Mobil station and after a few tanks I noticed it getting better and better. Maybe top tier did something or maybe it’s just coincidence, I don’t know, But I do know that the gas is usually the same price at the convenience store as it is at the Exxon Mobile across the street.
Ring Free, Chevron Techron and Mercury Quick Kleen are all quality products.
