Chevron invented the carbon busters in Techron. And that is the main ingredient in all these additives. The other 30-40% is varied by manufacturer. The stuff works and cleans up the backside of the valves.
Thatâs all in the fuel nerd video above!
What are your thoughts on adding Seafoam to 4 cycle engines in marine applications?
I guess I am super lucky I put 87 in the 2 stroke and 4 stroke all the time I did just have to change the plugs on the 2 stroke last week but I keep 2 spare plugs on the boat at all times so easy peasy
Jimmy, 87, 89, 93 is the octane rating not the quality level. Most âwith the exception of a fewâ outboards werr designed for 87. Running higher octane would do nothing but cost you more per gallon.
I quess I meant I do not run ethanol free fuel.
Higher octane = slower burning, for high compression engines to help alleviate knock. In gasoline engines around 10:1 to 12:1 compression ratio, totally un-necessary. Typically more alkylates used in the blend to up the octane. Also methyl tertiary butyl ether but refiners have mostly phased that out. Better money spent on ethanol free gasoline than running higher octane, unless of course it is a high-compression engine.
Yeah man. I recommend ethanol free to about everyone but only because most folks donât use their stuff! I run ethanol fuels in everything but will switch over to Non-E come fall for all my power equipment and add stabil. Most folks wonât rake the time and let it sit all winter or off season and wonder why their stuff wonât start. Most all modern engines are designed and equiped for ethanol.
Iâll chime in with my personal experience. 2011 Etec with tough starting issues. I ran E-10 or non-E in it for the past three years. Once the hard to start issues became a big problem I ran heavy doses of Techron⌠no help. Then STPâŚ.. no help. MMOâŚ.. no help. SeafoamâŚ. getting better. Then this past Saturday I ran 6oz of ring free to 15gal of Non-E and ran the piss out of it. Much better. Turns over in one or two cranks and is running smoother as well. I would normally call all these additives âsnake oilâ but Ring Free is turning me into a believer so far.
As a commercial operator Iâve never run anything other than basic 87 ethanol fuels - for many years. Itâs a very rare year when a tank of fuel sits for a month or more for me- unlike the way recreational operators do, routinely ⌠I was advised more than forty years ago that modern fuels begin to deteriorate chemically in around 30 days⌠and the older the fuel - the more problems likely⌠After years and years of two strokes (E-Tec 90âs from 2005 until 2023) I was forced to make the switch to my first four stroke - a Yamaha 115, and made a point of checking with Jack Rupp of SeaPower (my dealer for many yearsâŚ) about whether Iâd need to make the switch to REC 90 non-ethanol fuel. He advised that there was no reason (and no real difference in performance between the two different fuels) - but that over time, Iâd probably need a fuel pump sooner with the ethanol than if I ran the non-ethanol fuel. Not the slightest problem so far - and nearing 400 hours. These days Iâm not running nearly as hard as I have in previous years⌠Now, if I were only fifty years youngerâŚ
I use to think like some and ran regular pump gas in my old maverick. I did run the boat usually twice a week and fuel didnât sit longer than a month before it was gone and replaced. Then about 5 years in I started fighting motors issues that seemed to be trash/what I assumed was fuel line pieces in the vst. After cleaning the vst 3-4 times and replacing all the lines. It was fixed. Because of that Iâm scared and have ran rec 90 in my panga and will continue to at least for now, but it sure is tempting to hit that pump by the house instead of driving another 2 miles.
Nothing but REC90 for many years + do run Ring Free in Yamaha. Someone posted running Ring Free thru Suzuki every so often.
Sounds interesting as definitely know RF works for extended life/performance in Yamahaâs but would like to know more thoughts from those who know more than me re: RF occasionally in Zuke. ⌠Definitely REC 90 in lawnmowers, chain saws, blowers, trimmers, etc.!
Its not going to hurt the Suzuki, or any motor. It is not designed to be used specifically for Yamaha.
Watch the video above, the Ring Free and Techron use the same active ingredient. Ring Free is just a higher concentration.
I buy a new motor every 5 years and run whatever gas I can find.
Thank you Tarponhead for clarification.
In my Fl B2 Merc 60 I only use Rec-90 primarily from Marathon. No issues though I do use Merc quiksilver fuel and also stabil.
On my Maine 150 Yami webhave no Rec 90 available so use regukar with Ethanol. About every 5 years I have to have my injectors cleaned. Cost about $75. Takes care of the issues so far. My yami is a 2006 with a lot of hours.
