I have danco premio and manley. I like them both, but i did not get the stainless manleys and i stupidly did not spray them with corrosion X when i first got them so they are a little corroded. I know plenty of guy who just buy a cheap pair of the aluminum ones every few yrs.
I have had my Hatch pliers for about nine years. They weren’t cheap, but they haven’t let me down. The only thing I’m worried about is losing them.
I’ve been using Skinny Water Culture pliers for a couple of years now and like them:
$60 and they sell replaceable cutters for $16. I picked up two sets and haven’t even opened the second set yet. They’ve held up good. Plus, SWC is a small, family run company - so I’d rather give Vince my cash.
I keep a pair of the 6.5" Manleys oiled up in a sealed ziploc, as party of safety kit, in the event I need to cut a hook, but think they require too much babying to be my daily driver. If you I don’t keep mine oiled up, I can watch the rust form. Great pliers, but I opt for a titanium pair of pliers for normal use…minimal maintenance
I liked my Hansom pliers before they disappeared off my boat. Looks like they are sold out everywhere but the SWC pliers @coconutgroves recommended look very similar. SWC is a great company as he mentioned and looks like I need to snag a pair from them now.
X2 on the Manly 5" super pliers. Have had my current pair since about 2014/2015. They definitely show their age with some surface rust, but some wd-40 and a wire brush takes it right off and they still work and cut like they are brand new. My pair is awesome cause its the older style that came with the leather sheath and a 4" razor sharp knife.
Had a couple other pairs of them at the start but have slowly lost them. Think ones in the bottom of the mississippi canyon from a swordfishing trip.
Kast king. I’ve got one pair that lives in my cooler/dry box. And two others I use around the house, because I’ve needed to bring them on the boat, yet.
SWC titanium pliers have served me well for the past couple years, grabbed em on a sale for I believe 100$ and they’ve been great and held up well!
I have had Manley pliers for decades, the very best at wire work, bending eyes to make multi hook kingfish rigs, cutting hooks (had to cut a through n through on my forearm once when an idiot swung a fish into me) mono and braid. But I do not wear them, they stay in the tackle box as they will rust. I wear whatever longer traditional plier that is soaked in salt water all day long. I’m actually looking at the SWC pliers to replace a high end pair of Dancos that I have beat to death in the last year.
I have Danco ones that I really like. Pretty sure they are the aluminum Pro series. I really like them.
I had the SWC pliers that went with me to Brazil but I gifted them to my guide.
Same here…mine are the co-branded Tailwater ones. Was an incredible deal. I should have bought two. Now $180 via SWC: Plier-SWC-Titanium-Plier. Still a decent deal versus the other titanium ones.
I have had the same Danco Premio pliers for years. Smallest size they make,No rust, cutter is dull but fine.
Doubt they are titanium as I’ve had to bench vise them back in line a time or two.
For the money I’d buy them again.
My buddy just made these as a prototype. Titanium. I’d like him to make some with side cutters and no split ring thing.
Like my accurate.
Danco Titanium. used, tested and approved.
On my second pair of premio’s. Jaws on the first pair bent dehooking a snapper. Sent them back to danco for a new pair. I use them a bit more carefully now
Hate to admit it, but I exclusively use these $9.97 Tsunamis from Walmart. With two kids and a wife, I go through two to four pairs a year that are dropped overboard, borrowed and never returned, used in some unintended way (e.g. trying to open coconuts), or just plain lost. I usually get a couple pairs in my stocking as a joke. Have to say, they cut 10 lb. braid no problem, fit my hand well, stand up to plenty of neglect and abuse, and I can buy 10 pairs for the price of a single “good” pair.
Edit to say these are obviously worthless offshore, where I like duckbill-style pliers like the Manleys.
I recall your pain there. More than once I can see the kids dropping stuff overboard.
@zthomas - you and I share the same sense of value. 9.97 doesnt make you cry when it goes “plunk!”
Have a pair of the SWC Premium Pliers on the way. 59.00 seemed like a good price. They will be hard tested for sure. lol
