Hey all - Carrying over the thread from the MS forum - if you are here - consider this a role call so we can start locking down a date for a NE SC and SE NC area meet and greet on the Cape Fear river.
Thinking we’ll keep it simple and informal - dates never gonna work for everyone, but if you are interested in the general concept, chime in here. If you are between skiffs, mention that - we’ll put you on someone elses!
We’ll look at multiple dates - keep suggestions coming - we’ll hold 6/19 and see if anyone else can make it though - think of it as a potential test run!
First of all - an update - as of now, I think we have enough interest to do a “trial” run of a meet and greet on June 19th (Thursday). I know this is mid-week for those of you who don’t work for woke corporations that give you time off for made-up holidays, but for those who are retired or can get the day off - this will give us a chance to try out the location and get our logistics figured out. If you can make it - please chime in below.
Second - I’m in jail on the other forum where this originated - if you are a member who is NOT banned on that forum, can you get the message out about June 19th and let everyone know? You do not have to risk jail by mentioning this forum - just let them know the 19th is our trial run and we’ll get more details on location and timing ASAP.
For those interested, here are the initial details:
Launch anywhere/any time you want - downtown Dram tree Park, Snows Cut, or the State park (Small fee, check open time).
Fish the morning however you want - but if you want to interact with other members for the morning, PM me your contact info and I’ll get a text group going. If there is enough interest, we’ll run a fun-a-ment for the morning.
We’ll meet on an island somewhere between Snow’s cut and Downtown around 1:00 - I’ll get the details on the island but PARK ON THE OPPOSITE side from the main channel! Big ships come through and they create surf-able waves (ask me how I know). Again, more details on the specific island coming.
Not sure how we’ll work food yet, but I’m thinking I’ll get a grill going and sling hot dogs at everyone. BYOB(everage).
IF you are between boats, let us know, I will try to pair you up with a boat owner who has a spot if possible. If not, be patient, if this goes well we’ll do it again soon.
ALL OF THIS IS WEATHER DEPENDANT so I’ll make a final decision on go/no-go no later than Wednesday June 18th, but probably by that Monday. The river can get REALLY snotty with the wrong wind/tide situation and I don’t want folks sinking their boats!
So - again - Two asks:
Let me know if you have an interest in this for the 19th
If you are still allowed to post this on MS - please copy and paste this over for me and put folks in touch with me however you can!
Hey Mav, I won’t be able to make it but good to see y’all are gonna make it happen. As far as I know, I’m not jailed on MS, I’ll go relay the message, and let you know if anyone reaches out directly to me about it.
Unfortunately, I am working in the clinic on the 19th. Still have the 21st off. Let me know how the test run goes! I’ll try to swap a shift with someone for the 19th.
Thanks Coffee Run! I hope you are able to get that swap! If not, we will do this again on a more available date. If you can help any interested MSers find their way to me, that would be great!
I’ll be out of town that whole stretch, June 19-22, at my sister’s wedding… no getting out of that one. If the weather cooperates I do plan on fishing the river the weekends of 6/14 and 6/28
It’s official - Let’s do the 21st. We’ll have to battle the weekend traffic a bit, but the river tends to be pretty quiet. Plan to launch at any of the main three ramps - Downtown, State park, or Snows cut. Fish the a.m., meet up at an island midday - I’ll have the island finalized once I can get out and do some recon to confirm a good choice - as of right now, though, the current leading contender is Adventure Island which is just north of Snow’s cut.
More details soon - but chime in below if you are interested and/or shoot me a PM with your contact info (text) so I can build a contact group for the day of.
We’re celebrating my daughter’s 5th Birthday on 6/21. I can try to sneak out for an hour or so for the island meetup. Is Adventure Island the one I have circled?
OK…update on River Road boat ramp. I had reported that they’d made changes and that the ramp was basically a kayak launch. That’s pretty much still true, but I actually walked out past the ramp and onto the pier they have built to see what people were catching yesterday.
It was high tide mind you but the “curve” I reported is just slight at the top. It looked far worse when I just drove by. The parking is still not great, and bigger boats may have a problem. A small skiff like a SaltMarsh should have not problem though…
