Been looking at getting two larger canoes or a couple of Gheenoes. But I have next to zero experience actually paddling Gheenoes. All the ones I had were powered
I’ll be poling mine more than paddling it. Something to think about.
The 15’4" gheenoe paddles ok. It has a much narrower transom than the 13 gheenoe.
Yeah I was really thinking that would be the best one for paddling. I was concerned about the weight of it though. That’s what has me looking at bigger canoes. But I really like the stability of the Gheenoes
Welcome aboard @Jonny
You can always add a 9.9 or 15hp and ride out. I don’t think you can with the canoe. I may be wrong about that.
If you want something to paddle get an actual canoe. Gheenoes do not paddle well at all. Can it be done….yes. My outboard died on my gheenoe classic right before a buddy came into town for a flood tide. We paddled about 3 miles fished and paddled back. Sucked, but I got him on his first couple reds in the grass which made it worth it. They pole ok, but really gheenoes shine with a outboard and trolling motor. In calm water.
Yeah that’s kinda been my experience too. But I was hoping maybe the 15.4 was a decent paddler
I’d think the best option for paddling and motoring is a Y-stern canoe-- you get the efficiency at waterline of a normal canoe, but a flat stern to mount a motor. You tend to see these in places like Maine, the Boundary Waters, etc. where “canoe tripping” is a thing. Would love to find one closer to home.
I have a gheenoe NMZ and an Indian river otter. The NMZ paddles better, mainly just have the otter as its easy to throw in an out of the bed of the truck for duck hunting places I can’t have a trailer or get a trailer in the water.
I have poled/paddled the NMZ from the Eastside of 528 to the west side of the Banana River NMZ when KARS park was shut down during covid. Poling was much more efficient only paddled when we wanted to sit down or too deep in the channel. A regular canoe with dual pointed ends will paddle much better than something with a square stern.
You can paddle the Highsider with an SUP paddle. It is really easy.
simple response (been there done that),…NO !!!
maybe consider a sit on top kayak, have also a couple Tarpon 120s, very easy to paddle and track reasonably straight without alot of effort
Second the Tarpon 120. Super versatile boat. FYI: If you can find an older Perception Pescador, it’s from the same mold as the OG Tarpon 120 but flies under the radar and is usually cheaper.
Try finding a gladesmen way better than any gheenoe easy to paddle
