The other day I mentioned needing to start a new project on the new forum. Today I found this.
Just waiting to confirm the details and arrange pickup time if the deal goes thru.
15 foot canoe, I have a 2.5 suzuki im looking to put somewhere, This may be it. Maybe ill cut it in half & make it a little longer.
Heck yeah!!
If you’re going to be cutting it then what about widening it a little as well?
I like how you’re thinking !
She’s all mine boys ! picked her up this morning. My first purchase from a person wearing an ankle monitor ( not judging ), just laying it out there. Its actually 16 foot long and in better shape than the pictures made it look. The transom needs a little attention but i could mount my motor & be out fishing within an hour if i needed. I already contacted the county clerk to ask about registering a canoe without a HIN or anything but a bill of sale. The nice lady emailed me the form and said Fill out the form and bring it in we’ll assign you a HIN and your be good to go. That sounds WAY TOO EASY so we’ll see how it goes. She gave me her name and said she was a supervisor and to call her if I have a problem.
Square back Indian River Canoe - 16’ Chief model, Keeled.
Everything I post about this project will be added to this thread.

Yeah, Buddy! You need to take it out at least once to see how well it floats and handles before you do any mods, sorta a baseline. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
Better be full faux teak inside and out!
Sweet. Keep thinking about adding a canoe sometime. But then I have another project on the skiff, so I wonder when I’d find the time to use one. Can still dream, though.
it could happen but I was thinking easy and quick.
I have the motor, The canoe was really cheep, So there was nothing to loose.
Sweet. I love fishing canoes
Excited to see the transformation
The wife went fishing off shore with some of my friends so I took advantage of the time to dig into the Canoe. I buzzed out the transom, not much left but some pulp. I cut away the cover over the top of the little keel down the center and it also was missing most of the wood that was once there. I was considering options for replacing the keel insert, 1 - Replace the wood, bond it down & cover with CSM.
2 - fill the whole thing with strips of 1708 to the top and cover with CSM. Cut a strip of Coosa board and bond that in and cover with CSM. The trough is only 3/4"deep and 1" wide. There’s a couple spots where the glass is completely worn thru from it getting dragged along rocks or cement so if I fill it with 1708 It would never wear thru again.
Im looking for some recommendations, pros and cons.
What ever you end up doing let me know if you need some scrap 3/4 h80, 1/2 h60, and if you need a small piece of 3/4 coosa. I have so much random small cuts of pieces that I can’t justify tossing because i know it’ll be useful for projects down the road.
OK thank you
You need like a 90 2 stroke on it. Haul ass. Call it the Guided Missile.
The transom is in and the floor stiffeners have been replaced as needed. I decided on wood for all of it because it lasted 27 years with the first stuff & in 27 more I don’t think I’ll be worrying about it. I added a transom drain and extended the tube so I can drain water while making way. I guess it was designed to be bailed out with a pail. It was too easy to do while I was in there.
Looks like you made progress before I could chime in. The Kennedys I mess with, always have holes in the keels, more so in the bow area from beaching, and such.
What I did on my last and current build, was 1700 biax then filled it with an epoxy/flock pnut butter. Now it’s solid as concrete and will never be a concern.
I got all my glasswork work done and primed the inside with some 545 for the time being . The old glass was looking kinda dry and I could only imagine getting itchy from leaning against it. I’ll probably water test it this afternoon with the 2.5 Suzuki.
Damn your fast
