‘The Moment’ TFOs newest release

This gem popped up in my feed today. Of course they come out with a new offering now after I just bought a A2X.
Looks good though.
Black unsanded/unpainted blank.
Black Recoils.
Hook Keeper.
Pretty much the exact way I plan to build my next one, once I get my hands on a blank.

Moment:

A2-X:

I’m just not seeing enough to justify $180 more dollars. Maybe it’s me. I do like unsanded blanks. I’d like to cast one.

I am just glad they come with a decent reel seat. My BVK is a great stick, but the reel seat knobs are a joke.

I now fish mostly Scott and Sage… TFO is creeping their rod costs up toward those price points.

Interesting

Just ordered an 8wt. I’ll report back on my findings.

My thoughts as well! Wonder how long it will be before we see the first $1k TFO rod?

They better not get to the 1k mark otherwise they will lose everything they are based on. It’s all insane at the end. $1k for a rod and $75 for a replacement. Do the math.

What’s the difference between this and the axiom 2x?

Going to cast one soon when they arrive at community fly supply, will report back soon, supposed to be faster than the 2x

Wow I hadn’t kept up with tfo since I stopped buying them. I like their rods but man I experienced more rod breakages with them even one on a brand new rod while lawn casting, then anyone else’s and ended up selling them all except for the 6wt bvk that you can pry from my cold dead hands well at least until the extra tip section I got them to sell me breaks then I guess it will go away.

I wish them luck with it though they have always been super easy to work with on repairs.

@Will
I hadn’t even looked at the prices. That’s bit much for my taste. I get materials and such are costing more, but the A2x intro price was 349. That’s a far cry damn near $649

Guess they’ll probably discontinue the A2x now?

Hopefully if they do phase out the 2x they will go on close out so I can buy a couple more.

Tfo is starting to price themselves out of their niche I feel like. While I really like tfo rods asking almost 700 would probably make me consider other companies when buying my next fly rod. For 300 more you can pick the top of the line rod from any other brand and it will be made in America (if that’s important to you).

Just threw the 6/8/11wt moment and a 7 solution. Overall the moment has a lot more feel and punch than the a2x. 6wt was the best casting 6wt I’ve felt in the tfo lineup. For a 4piece rod they felt great in hand and fit and finish was also attractive. Cast all with wulff lines which I enjoy and they paired nicely to those rods. Solution was a great feeling rod in mod/fast similar to the blitz to me. May end up with an 8wt but really want a loomis nrx+ lol! Only time will tell, I have about 8 other tfo rods and I like them all for certain applications. Hardy and Ross and Reddington rods are also in the quiver.

Nice feedback. I finally got to spend some time with the A2X I recently purchased. There’s a lot of conflicting information when you get to reading up on it. One review calls it a rocket that’ll go to backing immediately, while another review says it’s a great rod up to 60’ but anything beyond that is a struggle, for example.

Unfortunately for me The wind was really howling yesterday so I didn’t get to really enjoy it to its fullest potential, but casting in windy conditions is just part of it, and it did well. Funny thing is, it actually casted into the wind better than it did with wind at my back. It’s actually got enough power to punch through it with nice tight loops, which was pretty impressive, but you also have to be mindful and not over power it.
I will agree though that it lacks in feel and feedback. So far I like it and it doesn’t seem as unforgiving as some make it sound, although you do have to be mindful of your casting stoke and back cast.

The moment has Kevlar wraps on the blank to keep it stiff when under stress which seems like it would make it much better under pressure when fighting heavy fish like jacks or tarpon. Definitely one to consider for the price point. Everyone has their own opinion because of casting stroke but it did fit mine well, especially the 6wt. The 11 felt very similar to my hardy and probably wouldn’t notice much difference in real fishing conditions. Always a rod will act differently depending on what flies are being thrown on it as well, heavy dumbbells seem to be difficult for all rods, put an ep baitfish on and they are all rockets hahaha

I think they are there, I fish Sage Mavs and w my club discount I can bag one for under 500…as I’m sure plenty of folks can as well. I don’t see a Moment being better than a Maverick

Good point here- anyone who likes the A2X should try to the Meverick if ever have a chance. To me, it was a better all the way around rod- good prices used rods floating around too.

How does the maverick compare to the salt hd? I thought that rod was pretty wimpy compared to the axiom 2x at least in 8 wt.

Not really sure- only used Mavs in 8 & 9, salt hds in 6 & 10. Both off recommendations from members on here. All complete different setups/uses. 8/9 Mavs off a skiff sight casting. 10 hd with intermediate sink in channels/jetty, and 6 hd for walking shallow flats with presentation being main focus.
