No more Seadek! Mineral Spirits and elbow grease. Still got a ways to go before getting back to OG.
That’s some brutal work!
Once you have to remove that stuff you will never put it on another boat
Agreed, has its place- but not on my boats.
You never know what you’ll find hiding under that stuff
Polling and bow platforms are the only places for it on my rig.
I found this method super easy and fast. Worked a charm for me at least.
Whenever I see boats with SeaDek everywhere, I see this in the owners future. Good luck. She’s looking good!
I tried Good Off when removing my SeaDek and it didn’t work as good as soaking with mineral spirits. It is good at some types of grime, but for large areas, MS performed much better. I just made a post about this:
The key to my method was the pressure washer. Food off, citristrip, etc… to somewhat dissolve the adhesive while not evaporating followed by the pressure washer.
In my mind this is the biggest draw back of having an aluminum skiff. I feel like you almost have to have it to deal with the heat. If I had a glass boat i’d never put it on more than just the platforms.
When I modified my aluminum hull and made it more of a poling skiff I sprayed light grey TuffCoat on the deck and in cockpit and it never got hot. It last many years before having to clean and touch up with another coat. The best thing about it is cats don’t scratch it up and it’s much easier to pressure wash and keep clean…and Made in USA.
I’m considering going with white TuffCoat for my deck, light gray for the cockpit and natural aluminum on the hull.
Sounds like a solid plan but that white might blind you when poling. Off white or cream is better. Or light grey and dark grey.
@m32825 I used Seattle gray and it turned out nice. Easy to use, easy cleanup, definitely get the tuffcoat rollers. They seam like a waste of money but they make all the difference.
You can get the finer nonskid or even smooth if you want. I went with the heavier rubber granules and sprayed it. Rolling it will get you more uniform finish but I sprayed it and called it good on the aluminum cap and cockpit. This was about twelve or so years ago and the boat is still being used in Louisiana and the finish still looks good.
@Smackdaddy53 That came out nice, what kind of gun did you spray it with?
A sheetrock hopper from Harbor Freight…probably why it looks like sheetrock texture
That looks perfect…I was surprised when I read you used Tuffcoat. All this time I thought it was traditional nonskid or Awlgrip. Well done!
