Rod Building Master Class

For all things rod building, tips, tricks and post up your builds!

I personally have built a 6wt PSI, 11wt GB, 8wt Iconoglass and a few lighter weight rods. Have a few psi’s and GB’s on the shelf waiting to be built

Let’s see what you have!

Working on a 1pc NFC 12wt right now.

Ti Recoil guides, ultralight seat, super minimalist and simple to keep the weight down.

Going to be my permanent boat rod

I’m working on a casting a rod currently, nothing fancy though. I’ve yet to build a fly rod.

I built the same rod a few years ago in addition to 8 & 10wts. Let me know what you think of it.

Simple is good!

@MikeCockman I always heard “Form Follows Function” If it don’t work right, it don’t matter how it looks. I like simple. Simple is good. Simple is functional. Simple is effective. Pretty doesn’t catch fish, simple does.

I tend ask if they intend to fish it or look at it. I’ve built a lot of “wall hangers” that are themed, either for military service or foolsball teams ect.. Pretty, yes, and technically functional, but The ones that are built to fish, are the simple builds. No crazy wraps or extras.

Full disclosure, my wife told me “if another blank shows up here I’m stabbing you with it” I guess the 50+ rods are too much😂

It’s obviously not a fly rod, but it’s nice, simple clean and functional.

I really do enjoy building rods, but since “Da Rona” prices and shipping cost have gotten ridiculous. The shipping cost have leveled off some finally, but material cost and availability has not. Like everything else though, you can dive as deep as you want.

Looks awesome! Where’d ya find that reel seat? I’ve been struggling to find a cutout style for larger rods lately.

I like simple and functional. Top 2 pics are 8wt, the other 2 pics are 6wt

“Let’s see what you have!”

ok, heres a couple, …9ft / 9wt with some feather work

  • basic IM7 blank w/Alps titanium stripper / reduction guides, Recoils for train / tip top

…or, lets push it the other direction 80-130 deep drop for 2000’

  • setup for electric / swordfish

Beautiful work. That feather inlay is awesome.

Lawn casted yesterday evening.

Can’t speak to the sensitivity really, but feels like a rocketship for distance.

Happy so far but they all feel great on a lawn, when you’re not trying to cast a fly that feels like a wet sock lol

@LowHydrogen
What line are you using on the 12?

Well, what I was throwing in the yard was a full intermediate rio clear line I use for my annual glades Tarpon trip.

It works and I can cast it fine but I hate it and don’t recommend it.

I like the SA textured lines much better and what I’m about to switch to on this.

The clear rio lines are slick as hell when they’re wet and it keeps me from sticking the fish as hard as I want to. Also the memory is really bad.
