There are some tapers a really like but dang they are twisty. I don’t seem to have the issues with SA or even Cortland that I do with RIO. Seriously considering selling out and just buying SA moving forward.
I agree and they seem to come twisty. I think the mono core is pretty stiff and it holds twist.
I’ve got Rio on my 12wt. It does seem to twist a fair amount, but so does my SA. I’m running Cortland All purpose on another 8wt and it’s buttery smooth, and rarely knots/kinks up.
Only rio line I use is their outbound short sinking line for smallies. I use Orvis/SA or Wulff for everything else. I haven’t liked how the Rio line handles hot days on a skiff deck.
Only use rio gold- for freshwater trout. It works like a charm for cold water.
My 6-10 wt salt rigs are all Wulff or SA.
I have Cortland on my 11 wt.
Man, I have worse twisting issues w/ the SA Mastery lines, but agree, seems like all my lines are twisted. I think it’s my cast, though - I’ll run it out in a current or while moving to get the worst of the twist out, and it will be fine for awhile, but after a full day of casting, it’s as bad as it started. I think my cast has a circle to it that ads a twist to the line each false cast.
What flies are you throwing? Some patterns can add twist to the line without knowing it. Some are obvious, like spoonflys, but even crab patterns and toads will twist the line. I like to run my line out starting a trip.
