I’m really wanting to upgrade to the point of having gauges and other info from my new motor displayed on a charfplotter. Does anyone know what data the F70 will provide? I think I’m going with a 10" Garmin plotter, but I haven’t bought anything. All recommendations are welcome.
I have an f70 set up with NMEA. Any info you want can be displayed. Will need an additional component for fuel.
Contact Eric @ Golden Channels.
He makes custom size NMEA cables, specifically the motor harness - the OEM versions are way too long for skiffs, so he makes shorter sizes, plus has all the drop cables, terminators, connectors and accessories. He’ll get you all setup. Tell him Keith sent you.
I have my F70 NMEA to a 10" Garmin.
It gives fuel burn, MPG GPA range etc, tank level etc. trim, RPM,. The F 70 does not provide as much data as some other engines or I need some component I don’t know about. I don’t believe that I have water, pressure oil, pressure or engine temp… Maybe I could have engine but for sure not water pressure. I’ll speak to the mechanics when I do my 30 hour break-in service if they can add more data, but I’m pretty sure you just connect NMEA and go. You do need to set up your Garmin with some fuel tank info to have accurate tank level and reset when you fill up.
Water pressure requires an additional unit installed inline with the hose. I don’t believe that is stock on most engines.
I have not seen oil pressure either - that requires a sensor but I believe some Yamahas may have it.
But engine temp, RPMs, fuel rate and voltage should be available. There is an add on for fuel management that stores fuel used and can replace the fuel guage. It works good for me in addition to the old fashion stick.
I think I recall installing a WP sensor on an F70 and there was already a plug under the cowling labeled WP and you just plug it in and it’s already wired up for the NEMA.
Thank you for this. I Highly recommend this move. I went from a research project to plug and play with a phone convo and a few emails. First class crew to work with.
I ended up getting a Lowrance Elite FS 9 due to sale price at west marine. I’m kinda on the fence because I’ve had used Garmin units before. I’ve not mounted it while I’m trying to justify the extra $ for the garmin but I did hook it up and the data is there. The one piece I can’t get set up of a trip fuel burn? The Garmin has such a thing on the Yamaha screen but maybe I need an extra part to make it work on that unit.
You are welcome. When rigging my NMEA I found lots of confusing or incorrect information, so I made a how to post on the other site about it. I’ll copy that over here at some point soon.
Re fuel burn - I would think you would be able to show that since it is real time data. On Simrad, I have to start a trip (specifically select this) for the value to be calculated correctly. In addition, I use a fuel data manager from Simrad that stores all the fuel data in memory. Link below for reference so other Simrad users can find it.
For Garmin, I did some searching and found this:
But I can’t say it is what you need for your combo of engine and GPS. My experience is Tohatsu and Simrad. Eric and Goldenchannels might be good to talk to on this one.
Simrad fuel data manager
Lowrance lists the same p/n for that part. I’ll have to look up install as fuel burned in a trip would be helpful.
