As long as there is demand… Are those shrimp trawls? Here in Texas , the oyster dredges have been raping our mid bay reefs or any other reef they can get to. I’ve noticed some of the people that have been not vocal enough against it (IMHO) are now investors or outright owners of oyster mariculture leases. We’ll see how this plays out but they act like there is zero downside. There’s always downsides. Boats have been oystering here since it was ever a thing. Just set quotas where they need to be. If a bushel of oysters shoots up to $200 , oh well.
Yeah, it’s crazy. Everyone knows what the issue is, but cronyism keeps it going.
NC Senate ads Trawling Ban to HB 442! Small victory, and the bill is just in committee to has to go for full house and senate vote but this is huge. The condensed version is trawling is moved at least 1/2 mile offshore (maybe more) along with protected areas. Thanks to all who wrote and called. It appears our voices made a difference as the politicians seemed to do a 180 on this bill!
Thanks also to Brewski for staying on top of this! He’s doing yeomans work!
@Hogprint Thanks for keeping us informed. I saw the Brewski video drop, but didn’t have time to listen. Man, I hope this passes - then onto the gill nets!
Well…who knows where this will go now. It was looking so promising. The shrimpers brought over 100 people to Raleigh, recreational fishermen came with six. They’re well organized and honestly, some of these families go back a couple generations so they hold a lot of sway.
I know there has to be some middle ground…
Brewski says he’s not even going to mention gill netting as long as they’re dragging 100yrd offshore. He has a point.
I honestly don’t see many gill netters anymore. At least where I put in. We did it when I was a kid at the mouth of Banks Channel south of the jetty in that creek that runs to the intercostal. Spots, croakers and the occasional spec…we took only what filled the cooler and probably only did it a couple of times over the winter months.
Brewski is probably talking about the big Chinese or Russian gill nets offshore, but I don’t know to what degree that affects our fisheries…
