GoFundMe for fellow fishing community friend - Owen Gayler

I wanted to pass this on for support of Owen Gayler and his family. Owen is a guide on the Texas coast and I am fortunate to call him a friend. But more importantly, he’s a family man and anyone that knows him can attest to this.

We are pulling for you Owen.

The support has been incredible. I’ve seen it shared no less than 30 times from people all across the US. Yesterday at this time the fund was a 40k, it is now at 110k. The community really has come out to support Owen and his family.

Probably an algorithm thing, but a news story popped up on my phone yesterday. It claimed that those stool sample tests that you send in are about as accurate as a colonoscopy at detecting the early signs of colon cancer. I think some variants you don’t even need an Rx for. At 61 , I’ve had several colonoscopies and I’m on an every three year schedule due to them finding polyps every time. Food for thought.

That’s good advice. Many doctor’s are more aggressive now with testing especially if there is a family history of it. My wife and I got tested at 40 and she was put on a every 5 years due to her family history and I was put on every 10 years. The new prep kits are easy to do. But there are many reasons people don’t go to doctor, but at 40 it is a must to have this checked.

Well dang I’m a few years late…

While talking about prevention, guys get your PSA levels checks regularly and if they are high, follow up. In 2016 my PSA levels weee high and it turned out that I had prostate cancer. Fortunately it was contained in the prostate, I had surgery and have had no reoccurrence or any sign of it since. When I was diagnosed I called both of my older brothers and told them to get checked, turned out that my oldest brother had prostate cancer as well.

Cancer sucks- just had a kidney removed end of April. Asymptomatic then out of the blue got a bad stomach ache- which turned up a kidney stone and a tumor. God works in mysterious ways-

Just my opinion, but I wouldn’t replace a colonoscopy with the at home test. I did one, then had a colonoscopy. One year later, a follow up colonoscopy and Stage 3 Colon Cancer. Surgery, Chemo and Radiation. I’m clear now, but would never miss another colonoscopy. Don’t want to go through that again…….

Same. Being as they find polyps with me. None of them have been a problem so far and I’m positive the at-home test would not have shown anything all these years. Meaning all of the polyps they have removed would still be in me growing until maybe they did become a problem.

I’m on the 5-year rotation as well. So far all benign, Thank you Lord. @Redchaser mentioned PSA test a few posts back. Get it checked guys!
My prior Dr called my numbers “stupid low” but I’m not neglecting the test. And yes along with the bloodwork comes the finger…

The stool test are only for those with low risk (also only approved for low risk) Family history, past polyps, any rectal bleeding all should only go the colonoscopy route.
