Fly tying vise

What would be the [mostly] preferred fly tying vise? I really want to get into tying my own flies.

Moved to Fly Fishing for better response.

Several favorite brands at different price points. Rotary style is the way to go, though.

What’s your budget? Renzetti SW traveller gets my vote

Following. I have an HMT vice - very basic but well built. I agree w/ Zika - in my next life I will get a rotary vice.

I tie flies because I have to, though, not particularly because I want to!

If you research, the Renzetti Traveler is on of the more popular of the solid yet reasonable vises. That’s what I got. Its not cheap, but seems well built and should last a lifetime. Not as flashy and fancy as some of the others, but its a workhorse.

I use a regal big game travel vise. I’ve tied everything from saltwater flies to size 18 trout flies with it. It’s not a rotary so you have to manually flip the fly in the vise. Renzetti is quality and I’ve also heard good things about the Peak vise.

For saltwater flies I like my Dyna King, the grooved jaws really lock the hook in place and will not move when tying with spun deer hair.

Another vote for the Renzetti Traveler. Great price and will last you a long time. If you are truly a beginner get something for cheap and see if you even enjoy it. Good luck!

As you’ve seen, the Traveler is quite popular. As is the Peak Rotary.
I use a Dyna King, and it’s a great lil vise. Only complaint is the fly doesn’t stay level when rotating it, but it’s not a deal breaker.
I picked mine up off eBay, for a really good price. Looked brand new and even came in the original box.
Whatever ya do though..Stay away from the Amazon junk. I thought I’d try one out for my daughter and it was horrible.

That’s a loaded question. Ultimately it’s going to come down to price point. All of the above mentioned are great choices. Whatever you pick make sure that it’s a rotary vise.

I’ve got a Peak vice and no complaints.

Anyone familiar with this version? Looks like a Peak, but half the price?

I’ve been using a Dan Vise for many years without any issues. It’s not as sexy as my Renzetti, but it’ll do everything the Renzetti does. My wife got it for me many years ago, when our finances were tight. Due to the sentimental value (my wife died in 2015 after 34 1/2 years of marriage) it’s still my primary vise. I think they’re running around a hundred bucks these days. If your money’s tight it’s a solid vise.

I tied on a Danvise for many years, and folks made fun of it because it was “plastic.” My answer to that was, All it has to hold is a hook. I ain’t sharpening mower blades on it. My only problem was I chipped the jaws right after I got it, user error. Several years later I found a flyshop out west that carried them in their online shop. I kept the old ones for backup but never needed them. Highly recommended!
