Anyone have a good suggestion for a good value fly box? Most of my flies are pretty tall, and the ones I have are really meant for trout flies. I’d like to get something that is fairly small, but tall enough to accomodate poppers and other larger flies.
Seriously just buy a Plano waterproof StowAway box. The problem with those fancy boxes(I have two)…. A) they don’t work for mono weed guards. B) even the gasket’d ones will allow water in rusting out your hooks. I’ve converted and will never look back.
hmm - winner winner chicken dinner - I think this might be the call. NO point in foam, is there? These flies are big and I can keep them from moving around using cotton balls or something similar.
For those that have many flies with weedguards, the cheaper boxes with the triangles cut in the foam slits work best. Can slide the weedguard in there and not bend it.
Also I always take that outside foam side from the cheap boxes off and stick it on my tying desk to hold flies.
Another trick I use is to keep a wide mouth Nalgene bottle on the skiff. Water and a dash of salt away to clean my flies on boat, then let them dry on a SeaDek patch.
I use this one, but from a local shop. Nearly all shops buy this model and slap their own logo on it. I like that it’s two sided, and has clear covers to view the flys. Mad River Outfitters Magnum Fly Box
