Took Wednesday and Thursday off to go lobstering with my buddy but he had something come up last minute and can’t go anymore. With wind being 5-10 I’m thinking about scrapping the lobster gear in exchange for the long rod. Anyone ever fish areas like John Pennekamp or Everglades national park during mini season? Objective would be to get away from the craziness but not sure if my theory of restricted lobstering areas being free of boats holds true.
ENP will be fine. If you are going to down in the Keys, you can easily access the park waters from Tavernier or Islamorada.
No lobstering in ENP so shouldn’t be an issue there. I live and lobster adjacent to Pennekamp, there will be lots of boat traffic, but most will be lobstering father out if you’re fishing flats and shorelines.
Ramps will be crazy, but he flats will be heaven.
I’ve been fishing first two hours of light and then going to work. After work I’ll fish the last two hours of light. Too damn hot out there. You’ll want to jump in the water mid day. Hotter than a witches tit. Bunch of boats scouting past two days in Islamorada but doesn’t seem as busy as past years.
Last year I was fishing on the day of the “pre” mini season. I had no clue. I was wondering why the boat ramp parking lot was full and the sun wasn’t even up yet. It wasn’t too terrible and I left early so missed the afternoon rush. If in ENP, no problem. If at a ramp that gives access to lobstering area might want to plan your launch and retrieve times carefully.
Some of my best fishing has been in low boat traffic areas so good to hear there are options during lobster season. I still might try to lobster solo for a couple hours but I really hate dealing with crowds on the water. I live in Key Largo and have a community boat ramp so launching is no issue. Currently thinking ocean side flats as plan A with winds being so low.
