I see there’s 3mm up to 8mm thick options to replace trailer bunk carpeting. My dumb*ss automatically thinks thicker would last longer; I am right? Seem like CE Smith or Cuda are popular brands. Thanks
I’ve never tested this theory but common sense tells me thicker should last longer. I used that Smith carpet when I upgraded and added bunks to my trailer and it’s been great for several years.
I typically just buy bunk carpet from Walmart. No idea if one brand is any better than another or if thicker is better, but the Walmart stuff holds up well. Only issue I see with thicker would be folding around the corners and stapling through it.
Buy a cheap electric stapler with stainless staples, makes the job way easier.
Home Depot carries TrafficMaster outdoor carpet and also boat / RV carpet. They don’t have MM ratings, but you can see their depth on the site and convert if needed.
I heard this is what some trailer makers use on their bunks.
Here is a sample square I got to compare against my Ramlin bunks - it is the same thickness and seems like an exact match.
The 16 oz weight and pile on this comes out to around 3mm. They make a 20 oz boat carpet and I believe that is around 4 mm. Thicker in theory sounds better, but I would think thicker carpet will be tougher to bend around the edges of the board.
Thanks folks
I just redid my bunks with the Cuda brand carpet. It seemed to be good quality and installed no problem. it was thicker and felt better than what came with the trailer. Can’t comment on durability as I just put my boat away for the winter.
I’ll theorize thinner makes for easier launching but I really don’t know. Less friction?
