woodworking and framing art is definitely an art onto itself… up here on cape cod, a decent looking “custom” frame from a frame shop costs anywhere from $500-$1,000, which to me is a little nuts for what you get…
I just made two new seaglass frames, one for my redfish original, and one for my mahi mahi original. In the past I wasn’t a fan of the all white frame, but I think that is because I was painting them a bright pure white. Lately I’ve been painting them on off-white color with a matching matteboard, and I really love the results. The fish really pops off the page.
I stuck a redfish print in the old oyster shell frame, I still think it looks cool with the oyster shells, just not as clean as the white seaglass frame
If that SeaOX is the one that I’m thinking of that is now Pair those are very nice Well built hulls.
I’d say trailer that thing up to the Carolinas and have Pair redo it
David, thanks for the kind words.
An old friend John Steward who was a neighbor in Spanish Wells Bahamas where I had a home base for many years did extremely detailed watercolor renderings of fish. He used paint brushes with maybe 6 hairs to do the details.
I have lived off my art sales building our small place over there ad raising our daughters with my fish and boat wood sculptures. Used to have up to 8 galleries representing me over there through out the islands. Sold a couple thousand pieces during that era.
I do my fish in a semi production system. I have patterns of all fish I have speared, caught or just freehand drawn up. I then use them to cut blanks out. From there I just shape up 4-5 fish at a time, then do the knife details, mouths, teeth eyes in sequence. So each sequence can be just minutes to an hour or so per fish. When I paint the fish I do 3 at a time. I have to be in a groove so I like just being alone and thinking fish, fish fish. Typical finished fish takes about 3-/12 - 12 hours each depending on fish and details. Now I do my fish in the winter doing 30 at a go.. Bigger fish are easier. I get from $450- $3500.00 per fish depending on size and type. I don’t like shipping because of the time it takes to package up. Everywhere I go pretty much sell out so it’s been a good side gig. I really like connecting with buyers who see what I see.
@David_Riina Just because I need a fix, would you post up a pic of that print I reached out about awhile back - the one with the rippled water and the redfish barely visible? That is absolute eye candy.
I don’t paint of carve but I’ve taken a few photos. I just gave my daughter a 11x14 framed picture of this. When she was a young dancer she helped with this
It basically shoes her stepping out of tennis shoes all the way to toe shoes
My latest carving for Capt.Robert Alexander and his Beryllium skiff which I built for him in Mt. Olive NC 6 years ago. Robert guides out of it full time in Bluffton SC.
im a painter and a musician but now I am a full time missionary. There was a time I used to tour, and even opened up for coldplay. Still paint, but just for myself these days
I dont consider myself an artist but I used to put together wood, glass, and carbons to make traditional style bows. As far as painting nah not this lefty.
Bro, this is nice. If you ever want to make a casting of them, I know how to make moulds for cold cast bronze and finish them. This is really really good work.
