30 - 115HP Motor Comparison

Back when I was trying to figure out the best powerplant for my build, I put together a motor comparison grid. I don’t think much has changed since then (~Dec 2024), but placing it up here. Towards the end of the year, I plan to update this and include some additional fields as well.

Took care making this, but no guarantees this is all correct…do your own research before making any decisions. If you find anything wrong, call it out please and I will keep this updated.

Well done!! As most of us, I’ve been contemplating my next unit. I really want a 90 but the weight of the F70 and a tune to get 80-85hp has me thinking

Yamaha could sell a ton of 30 horse motors if they would get the weight down.

All stacked up, the F70 is really something special, right?

Bought a Yamaha F70 last summer for my HB Pro. It was the right decision. Replaced a Merc 60 POS. I considered finding a Yamaha 2 stroke 90 and rebuilding it. The weight is about the same as the 70. I dont think I would have used the extra power. The difference in sound level is a huge plus for me. Running a 4 blade prop. Good hole shot. I get 36-38mph WOT, minimal load, just me in it. With 2, will get 34 or so.

Just my opinion. The 10-15 extra horse power will be a minimal difference. The lighter the skiff, the more you would feel it.
How much does that tune go for? And who sells it?

I went from a Suzuki 60 to a F70 on my Mosquito, definitely a different boat! The 70 Yammy is perfect for skiffs like the HB Pro, BT Mosquito type craft.

Thanks for porting this over @greentide

Great resource!

And if they would do a 15" instead of a 20" shaft. Plus it would drop a little weight. All the manufacturers should do this actually. Not sure if Tohatsu 30 hp is a 15" or not. This is a pretty big deal actually.

Tohatsu makes a short shaft 30. One is going on my Whip with HMP Jack Plate.

I believe the weight difference between the short and long shaft Tohatsu 50 / 60 engines is only around 5 lbs. Nothing that is going to make any noticeable difference for draft, but a considerable difference in how the boat is rigged and runs.

Vinny did you get an HMP? Is Mr HMP on Skiff HQ?

Thanks for posting, I geek out on this kind of info
