Nice work!!
I’ve been wanting to tie something like that up. I tried it with Maribou and buck tail but the result wasn’t pretty..![]()
The redfish love that pattern when they are focused on pinfish.
Looks like moby ■■■■! Nice water pushing minnow! Nice work!
@Loogie my FL guys always get a laugh when I pull that out in the morning
I’ve got a few bigger flies I throw, especially in the spring/summer. The reds and bass aren’t shy at all and will absolutely inhale them.
Anyone that fishes big tarpon in the backcountry rivers of the Everglades will take one look at that big, black fly - and know exactly what it’s for… good looking bug
I’ve Been working on developing a Killifish that stands out in murky water, after trying a few patterns I’m Settling on these minnows, they look good in murky water! The top one is the prototype, the bottom one is what they will all look like.
Those will hunt Loog
I think your rendition of this fly is superb. I need the double kick stand weed guard on them. Have you experimented with that? Do you have a method for getting both legs straight and parallel? Great work @Loogie
Thanks, I think they will be a staple along with the Everglades Special.
Ref hook guards, I definitely tie them w guards, mostly a single but my technique works for the double as well.
Make sure you tie a flat finish knot not tapered.
Use 25lb flouro, with the flat surface of a small set of pliers, smash the mono flat on about 1/16” and twist it 90deg. That shape will hold.
Lay the flat flouro on the flat knot and tie in, if using two just tie them 10 deg apart. Now add the taper, and finish the fly.
That’s how I do it.
Here’s a tip that has worked well for us… in murky water (heck, in muddy waters…) go to pink and white - or all pink flies (with as bright a pink color as you can find)… Not exactly traditional “match the hatch” (but if they can’t see your fly… what chance to you have?).
great big “serious” pink fly…
That is similar to my technique. However it doesn’t lend to double guards. I know how to get em on there, but they are never straight and true.
My problem with the V guard is they tend to open or splay on me. Singles are less fussy! But if you figure out a sure fire way for a V I’m all ears!
If you look at an EP-tied peanut butter, you will see their double leg guard. Super straight and parallel. No idea how it’s done…
