Vintage Fishing Photos

Thought it would be fun to see some vintage fishing photos. Before the iPhone, GoPro, etc. I’ll get it started. Let’s see some from you!

A Toman (snakehead) on my old Langley levelwind (my first levelwind reel). That’s the Musi River in Sumatra, Indonesia behind me. It was across the street from our house. The photo’s from 1958 (I think).

A bonito I caught on my first offshore trip after moving to Coral Gables in 1965. The first day there I caught a 15 lb. snook in the waterway behind the motel where we stayed waiting for the house to be built. I can’t find the photo of the snook; I think it was in a case of several thousand color slides that were destroyed in storage. Sad loss; the slides were from all over the world.

Funny this came up as my dad sent me the below photo earlier in the week. Sometime from the early 70’s no closed season, 18” minimum, 4 fish per person. Him and my uncle are the two kids in the front.

Unfortunately between house fires and life, I don’t have very many old family photos but a few surface from time to time. I don’t remember the what or where, but according to my mother, this was me in Ozello circa early 80s.

Classic bamboo rod…is that an “ocean city” spinner?

Unknown; it was my uncle’s rod and reel. That was my first salt water trip.

Here’s a pic from 78 or 79 (back before that skin doctor took away my ability to grow a mustache)…. Within sight of Crandon marina, on six pound line - a bit over 10lbs (they got bigger than that back then…)

complete lack of sun coverage (and no sunscreen). We were mostly ignorant about such things. It was a different time.

A current photo - friendly looking no? Covered up like a desert raider with gloves on, long pants, long sleeves - even in August. I get to see my skin doc every three months - lucky me… Now for a bit of reality.. the sun down here can kill you over time - I have a list of the folks I’ve known taken down by melanoma (as one of my docs pointed out - “that stuff’s nasty - keeps coming back as something else, somewhere else…”). Fortunately for me - no melanoma has appeared - yet…. Last word - don’t fool around, go see a dermatologist and get looked at regularly if your skin got damaged when young - since that’s when you start that clock running if you’re susceptible… I find myself saying “sir” to whoever is holding the knife at my dermatologist… not that it helps.

Great and important advice. I’ve had countless harvestings and surgeries at the Dermatologist office. Keep covered up, Anglers!

In 1966, a friend and I went to Acapulco, went out fishing in a 28-foot wooden boat, with a 40 HP Johnson, and, about 20 miles out(!), I caught an 8’10", 125 lb. sailfish. I was 21. Since then I’m only interested in fishing for something I can eat! The fish wasn’t very far short of the Pacific record at the time, but we didn’t have IGFA gear, and, the first 6" of its bill was broken off. Still, a fantastic memory. My Dad worked for the newspaper, hence the pic. TexasJim
