Steering stops

So how do you guys stop Tillers from flopping around when trailing?

Use the friction steering lock on Yamaha, trailer with the jack plate all the way down, use dyneema bungee cords on the handle attached to the poling platform, and use a transom saver set as low as possible for road clearance

Tohatsu has a steering friction assist too. Just pull it all the way over and it locks down pretty tight, but I imagine it will loosen up as it wears in. The above mentioned are all good.

@VinnyL The steering friction adjust will probably not be strong enough; it is NOT for me. I have used the bungee/cord method that @Oyster referred to. Lately I have started using this device as recommended by @DBStoots….

Never thought about that to be used for both, a transom saver and steering stop. I’ve been using one on the Evo in addition to steering stops

Those won’t work on your tiller. No rods.

I know, it’s what I’ve been using in addition to the transom saver

on the Evo. I never realized the TS also acts as a steering stop.

Drill hole at the corner of your trim tab and cavitation plate to hook a rubber bungee in. Stops motor from turning and/or bouncing on bumpy roads

Unless you forgot to strap your boat down on the trailer it’s not moving on the trailer. That little springy shock absorber on the transom saver is actually increasing stress on your outboard’s tilt / trim hydraulics. A solid transom saver keeps the road bounce from being transmitted to the hydraulics. I imagine it’d do a better job of keeping the outboard pointed straight ahead, also.

Solid TS example please?

Most are solid. Very few have that spring-loaded shock absorber shown in your photograph.

Made in USA and outboard specific…

I just use the friction thingy on my Merc. Works just fine.

I went down this rabbit hole with my F40 yamaha. Motormate won’t work. The little yamahas don’t have the place to “push” on. I had to go another way.

I think Vinny is getting a Tohat? Hopefully these will work for him. They are great devices.

They don’t have a Suzuki or Tohatsu application. Motormate that is.

I bet I could make one work

When I had a Honda 30 on the last boat the trailer wasn’t easily adapted to a standard transom saver. I looked at the MotorMate and saw no application for my outboard. I bought a MY Wedge for the tilt / trim ram, which looked like it had a metal housing. It never occurred to me to check. Mac (Smackdaddy) had the boat for some work and called me; the plastic housing for the ram was cracked. Tilting the outboard down on the MY Wedge was too much stress on the plastic housing. Since the outboard had to be elevated when trailering, I just cut off a section of an old broken shovel handle and stuck it in the bracket. It didn’t look too sexy, but it worked just fine. Now that I have a tunnel hull, I just trailer with the jack plate up and the lower unit trimmed all the way in. No stress on the hydraulics and no lower unit pointing at the car behind me.

No doubt :joy:

I was under the impression “you trailer with JP all the way down to limit leverage” I could easily trailer with the JPmaxed out with the engine trimmed down.
