Hello. I occasionally throw my 4wt for peacocks and the such down in here in south Florida. The trout line I have on it does get pretty noddlie when it’s real hot, like now.Does anyone one else fish sub 5 weights in similar hot climates? What fly line has been liked in 90+ degree temperatures?
Very few if any fly lines below 5 wts are made for tropics, what you have is a fly line that works well in cold water, since most rods that weight go after colder water fish. So your fly line doesn’t respond well to heat and gets noodly.
I’ve read about Scott Hamilton fishing 4wts off shore down here…..has to be options. The Rio Gold Dog Days is really the only option i’ve seen in a 4wt marketed for heat.
I’ve been using a SA GPX Mastery on one of my 2 weights, the TFO Pro II which is my go to 2 weight for salt water. I don’t remember what’s on the other 2 and on the half weight (the half weight only gets used in winter). The SA line is over ten years old and getting pretty raggedy. I just ordered a Winston Energy line to replace the SA; it’s supposed to be here Saturday. I haven’t had any major issues with the SA line. We’ll see how the Winston works in this heat Monday; the forecast is for a high of 94 and the LLM water temps have been in the mid 90s during the day.
I think Rio may make a warm water line in smaller weights. Look through their site to see if you can find one.
No experience with this, but might be a good option.
I’ve used the NoKnot line in a 7 weight. A friend bought it to try last year, and several of us tried it out; he lent his reel out for the day to some of them. Everybody liked it. Mark said he was waiting for winter to see how it behaved in cold weather, and subsequently said it had no issues in the cooler environment.
Here it is:
Have not used one but it might help you.
I fish the Rio Dog Days here in south florida when pond hopping with a 4wt. Had it about a year and I really like it.
Really the only option I came across, and what I will likely go with. I will check out the other lines mentioned also. Thanks!
