Would like to hear some feedback (ride, how it poles, dryness, necessary motor size - rated 30-60hp, fit/finish, manufacturer support, etc.) from those who own or have been on a Skimmer Skiff 16. Just some general opinions likes/dislikes, not looking for any bashing, seems like alot of boat for the money.
I had an IPB 16’, I think they are/were the same company. I loved it , easy to pole/not real dry but dry enough . Did 30 mph with a 40 Yamaha. Nothing fancy but it did its job
I had a buddy who used to have a center console 16 with I think a tohatsu 40 if I remember correctly. It handled mild chop with no issues and poled without any complaints. I think it slid a little bit on turns, but not enough for it to be a cause for concern. I owned a Skimmer 14 and I personally think those skimmers are best when you keep them as simple as possible - tillers with a poling platform and minimal add ons. Once you start adding on a bunch of extras you’re better off shelling out the money for something nicer imo.
What price range are you looking to be in?
Considering simple setup as a side console, bow mounted aluminum fuel tank, jackplate, tabs, but what Ive found interesting is read where someone had a 30hp on there’s and after they got the right prop on it was surprisingly acceptable. So it seems there’s alot of true flexibility with motor size?
Probably two biggest concerns is it tracks reasonably good and doesnt squat. Basically the boat will be 2 people max throwing artificials. As far as ride,…..its a 16’ skiff, so my view, going to have to accept a bit of wet and getting beat up at times, not a big deal
Yeah I’m sure you’d have no issues with a 30. I think Simple Skiffs are probably close in price too. As for squat I’m assuming you’re talking about stern squat while poling - which is pretty much inevitable if you’re poling solo. I don’t remember ever dragging the stern poling that boat with someone on the bow though
Owned a 14, if the 16 rides bow down like the 14 I wouldn’t recommend it.
I have a Simple Skiff tiller being delivered in Oct/Nov. Tohatsu 30hp paired to a Baumann prop ( 10 x 11p ) as others have. At the end of the day it’s an updated Whipray and a Morejohn design.. By his own words one of his best. Hard to go wrong as a choice in the sub 17’ category considering price and lead time.
IMHO, the Simple Skiffs CF16 is dam-near perfection in size and design, for the super-shallow sight fishing enthusiast. It’s minimalist and bare-bones, just like Flip would want it to be.
The Simple Skiffs CF16 is vacuum infused with 100% Vinyl-Ester Resin for superior strength and light weight. They could cut costs and build with polyester resin, but they choose to use the best materials available to eliminate warranty claims in the future. For me, it’s an important thing to ask any skiff builder… What materials they build with, and if they use the latest vacuum infusion technology?
@Nibonthefly curious about the price range for that set up. Dont need exact figures, just ball park? Got a friend that is looking and I didnt reize the ss was a conchfiah/cmj design.
All their pricing is right here:
Do you guys realize you are referring to two different boat builders and hull designs? Skimmer Skiffs and Simple Skiffs? Maybe I missed something but it was getting confusing.
lol, I think your right. OP said “simple setup” some posts up and that brought up simple skiff as an idea and now it’s taken shape. I’d go simple skiff over slimmer any day being said.
But depends what kind of boat you want.
My pricing was accurate to their build sheet page that was listed! Literally that plus tax, extremely transparent and boy do they look sharp in person. Going out to see one made me commit.
Yes, I know they’re different. More options and customization with a Skimmer Skiff. Simple Skiffs builds the shallowest draft, 16’ 4” fiberglass poling skiff for the purest, that you can customize yourself - if you aren’t concerned about adding more weight and increasing draft.
