Recently I recommended this site to one of my anglers and he replied that he did visit once or twice - but he was put off by what appeared to him as a stream of random posts. I long ago figured out that checking the “all categories” box on the pop-up solved that problem and figured that was a minor detail that an administrator would soon sort out.. To date though, that’s not the case. Hope it can be cleared up to be as friendly for first timers as possible. I’m guessing it’s impeding membership…

Not sure I follow, one thing to note is that while the site functions exactly the same regardless of device (laptop vs. phone) the layout may differ to fit the site properly into the viewing area of the device.
Regarding categories there are a few places you can see the full category list. Then you can select which category interests you.
Regarding the random posts, by default the “homepage” shows the latest posts. Users can choose what their landing homepage will be by editing their user preferences.
It’s not hard to navigate the site, just a little different than others. All he needs to do is click Unread or Latest and he will see the most recent posts and unread threads. There’s no reason for him to just give it a glance and stop visiting just because he doesn’t like the format.
If you want to view the site by Category, simply click on the “Categories” link (not the one on top, the one next to “Latest”) I’m assuming Latest is a default starting point. If you click Categories, then you have the categories. You will have to check every individual heading to see if there are any new threads.
I may be off base, but I’m thinking by his assumption of a bunch random posts, he’s referring to all topics/posts being jumbled together, as opposed to seeing each category listed individually like you would elsewhere. Personally I like seeing everything together as I don’t have to go through every category to see new or updated posts.
At any rate, line smack said, it’s not difficult to navigate, just different.
I don’t how the site looks to a new user, but maybe set the default page to Category instead of latest, if thats how it’s setup.
The site is a little different. When I hit the back button it often takes me back to the previous site I was reading as opposed to the SkiffHQ page I clicked through. Anyway, thought I’d provide a link to what I have set as my default when I click into SkiffHQ. Would love to see what others are using as their default for the site.
