Hey guys,
Can anyone who owns a Simrad/Lowrance Recon or Garmin Kraken tell me know your overall height/length from the top of your TM Head to the bottom of the motor area? I’d greatly appreciate it. Silly you can’t seem to find this info online!
Background, Im expecting my Simple Skiff end of month and trying to decide if the 54” shaft model is too long.
Simrad: top of head to bottom of motor = 62” + 4” keel ( if you need that)
Thanks @Tarponhead ! Do you find the 54” model too tall/long for your skiff? What would your opinion be on the height.
Yes it can be shorter. I would say by 12”, maybe 18” max IMO. I wanted shorter, but its not made. I intend to call Simrad one day and ask if shortening will void the warranty. I have read that PP will let you shorten the shaft with no detriment to the warranty.
I like the TM. I was fishing yesterday in very shallow water with it, 18” and less. I ran it varying at 5-10% throttle. Nothing spooked until I was 3’ or less from them with the motor on. I did this for 3.5 to 4 hours, at the end of the day I used 6% of battery ( there were a few higher speed excursions also). I use the Solid State Marine 24V 60 Ah battery. So far so good on the setup. I think its plenty of battery, no need for 36v on our lightweight low freeboard skiffs.

Thank you for the feedback! I’ve read on the PP Move you cannot simply cut the shaft but rather they send you a different length one and you conduct the install of said new shaft yourself according to their instructions and the warranty stays in place.
I like the PP Move but the cost since the increase is now over $1,600 above the Recon or Kraken.

That $1600 and a few pounds lighter is why I went the Recon route, even tho its new. PP will have to reduce their price, there isnt that big of a difference to warrant it IMO. Hell, they are probably made in the same Chi-com factory.
The Solid State Marine is the lightest battery out there.
I talked to SIMRAD today and they confirmed that shorting the shaft, aka altering the TM, would indeed void their product. So 54” shaft model at 66” total is our shortest until they possibly release a shorter one!
Crap Simrad!!! You have the lightest TM on the market, and wont offer a shorter shaft to be another step ahead of your competition in this market segment?
The Product Manager needs to join here and ask some questions.
Thanks @Nibonthefly

Here are the answers incase anyone searches this question or topic in the future.
-
The 54" model Simrad RECON is a total of 66" from top of head to bottom of skeg.
-
So it is shaft length + 12" for an accurate total.
-
The 48" model Garmin Kraken is a total of 60" from top of head to bottom of skeg.
- So this is also shaft length + 12" for an accurate total.
Recon length is confirmed via @Tarponhead (thanks!) kraken length is confirmed via knowing the bottom of head to top of motor (via diagram) is 48" and using ChatGPT to measure the remaining section.
