RIP Lenny Berg

Lenny Berg passed away very recently. He started the Maverick boat company as we know it. Here is the obit for some more on this very nice man:

For more on his life and accomplishments in his own words, look up the Millhouse podcast on Lenny. RIP

Edit: I should have said that he started what became the Maverick boat company that we know. He passed it along to Scott Deal, as we all know. Anyway, Lenny was an innovator and a super nice guy.

I owe that man a debt of grattitude. His hull is the precursor of my Master Angler and it is a truly amazing hull!

Lenny came by HBBWs one morning to talk about Bahamas creeks. I was leaving to go the the emergency room with a sliver of fiberglass in my eye. Only time I have ever had one in my eyeball like this. Terrible pain.

Lenny came in the front door, “what’s wrong Chris ? “ Showed him my eye. He said stay right there, went to his car and came back with a set of eye pieces like GoGo Gadget would have. Pulled out a pair of tweezers, said hold still and with his eyes looking through this microscope gadget removed the glass shard. The relief was instant.

We had a nice chat about the creeks of my Bahamas adventures looking for bonefish from my time there in 70s - 90s, him having fun fishing with Steve Huff in the sliced up mini Whipray we built for Steve.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to have known Lenny and his eras of fisherman.

Cheers to you

I met Lenny sometime in the 90s for the first time at White’s tackle in Ft Pierce. I shook his hand and respectfully said it was nice to meet you “Dr. Berg”. He said “don’t call me that…call me Lenny”. He drove a tricked out conversion van at the time and had a yellow Mirage HP “Holy Poler”. He took me fishing. A really unassuming guy, but with a wealth of knowledge in his head. Pretty sure his favorite thing to do was fish for snook with a plug rod with Steve. The fish they caught….

Yes he was a wonderful guy. I am trying to find some photos he mailed me of him standing on the bow of Steve’s little skiff with Lenny holding a large snook he caught on fly with Steve.

I think it’s great that when you get to a point in life and know what you enjoy doing you set time to do just that. He and Steve sure fished a lot together.
