Looking to get shine back on a slightly oxidized poling platform - any recs on how to approach?
Flitz Metal Polish and Mothers Aliminum Polish have been working for me. Also, Never Dull is a slightly abrasive wadding product that has been around for a long time that can be used for heavier tarnish, oxidation or corrosion.
If it’s still somewhat shiny and can be brought back by hand, never dull and mothers are both great products, otherwise it’s time to break out the buffer and get serious.
Hit youtube - there are some good videos there that show different levels of oxidation and hot to get it out. The more dull and rough the surface, the more elbow grease you’ll need. If you have pitting, that is there to stay.
Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but a bunch of the guys in our motorcycle group polished the alloy wheels on their rides and found out just what a PITA maintaining polished aluminum really is. Suggesting a brushed finish rather than shiny, and clearcoat it or wax it. Much less maintenance time later. It’s a lot easier and faster to rejuvenate a clear coat or wax than it is to repolish the metal. And as an aside, it’s nice not to put up with a lot of glaring reflection from your boat or your scooter on a sunny day.
Powder coat takes care of that. For bikes, the old saying Chrome Won’t Get Home holds true but I tell my wife each additional piece of chrome bling on my bikes are safety items due to their glare producing properties
That and riding obviously strapped seems to work for me.
