Perla Negra,ESB MX

I just wanted to share information on a recent trip to Perla Negra Lodge on Espiritu Santo Bay, MX.

The lodge owners are Brian Jill and Chris Owens from the TV series Fish Or Die. If you have watched the show, you’ll understand a bit about the lodge already.

ESB a full day’s travel (by shuttle van, 4x4 van and Panga) from Cancun. There are a handful of lodges on ESB as compared to Ascension where there are dozens. All of these lodges are more expensive than Perla and some offer local flights.

The Perla Lodge and bunk houses are a series of seasonal lobster shacks on the north side of the Bay, surrounded by jungle. It is very primitive; generator power only, and gravity supplied rain water. Sleeping is two to a shack with cots, bug nets and floor fans.

The main lodge has music and a bar. A local couple cooks authentic local cuisine for each meal. There is no shortage of alcohol.

ESB is a world class fishing destination. It’s some of the best permit fishing anywhere. Tarpon, snook and bones are also available year round. So are cubera snapper and big cudas. You have a real shot at a Super Slam.

The skiffs are Inman Panga 23’s with lean bars. They definitely help get you across the bay when it is blowing and the guides are remarkable on the platforms on these bigger vessels. They draft remarkably shallow, too!

Our guides were next level. These guys worked so hard to put us on the fish, it was near super human. They took enormous pride in our success.

Our group of 6 each caught at least one permit. Most of us got several. The largest in our group was about 25#. I ended up with three, and one break off. I Super Slammed on the trip and had the opportunity to share the skiff with Brian Jill, who also got a permit.

Night time dead sticking off the dock also produced a little surprise.

You can check out some videos on their YouTube channel Motiv Fishing. I highly recommend this trip if you don’t require pampering.

Thanks for the report. I noticed Vince from Skinny Water Culture in the pics - good stuff!

And it’s good to see a report from a basic place that focuses on fishing. I don’t need fancy, plush places to stay. Doing the math shows that the room is more expensive than the fishing.

How dis you get there from Cancun?

One of the hosts met us at a hotel at 7 am in a nice shuttle van. The drive to Mahahual is about 4 hours and we stopped and got refreshments and watered the urinals a few times. In Mahahual, the other host met us around lunch at a great little restaurant (I highly recommend the lobster tacos). There was time to shop.

Then we hopped into the lodge van, which is more suited for the next leg of the journey, which was part one lane highway and the rest was a coastline dirt “road”. It was an adventure. We saw Koti’s and crazy birds along the way.

Eventually, you get to Punta Allen, which is the nearest village at the south end of ESB. We transfer to the big pangas, hope in, and make the hour long trip to the lobster village where the lodge and shacks are. You get there around 430, unpack and eat dinner at 630.

Travel day is Sunday and departure day is Saturday. Fishing is Monday through Friday.

Vince is good guy and a friend. I was stoked to get the invite. We fished Oman together a few years ago, as well.

I had the same thoughts about this place, regarding a focus on fishing. I have to say, I enjoyed the accommodations far more than I expected to. There is a purity to that place that is medicine we are all deeply in need of.

Great report! I want to do some of that!

Seems like Tulum would be a better launch point, the airport is 85 miles closer to ESB. Flights to Tulum are easy from any mainline Hub.

I would go!

There are still issues with stylus but he is trying to get something together.

Tulum airport is a long way from Tulum, and from anything. There are few hotels there and it is a seedy and somewhat dangerous area.

But again, he is trying to pull something together for that.

I’ve been a long time supporter of SWC from the early days.

In regards to comfort, there is a remote spot in Belize I go to with one my guides - takes a few hours by boat and we stay at a ranger’s station. Bunk beds and screen windows. Absolutely a great experience to not see another boat around. They don’t take large groups, just two or three.
