I have the opportunity to purchase a Tibor Everglades or Riptide at a very good price. Haven’t seen in person but supposedly in excellent condition and lightly used. They’re around 15 years old. Cost aside , is there be a downside to reels of this age vs new?
If it’s in good shape no problem. The old Tibors are timeless. I bought an old gen 1 ported Everglades a year ago and love that thing. If in doubt send to me and I’ll buy it😀
My go to Everglades is a gen 1 round port and my other sized reels are as well, they are great.
I concur with the @rovster and @smackdaddy53
The OG Tibors are just a cut above. I have a bunch (some I use and some are for my collection).
If they are in great shape and you don’t like them, you can always sell them for a profit.
Just don’t pursue it unless you are ready to go down the rabbit hole. I started with one and now have at least one in each size (2-4 is the norm per size) except Pacific.
Sounds like I should turn around slowly and run!
If you decide you don’t want them post the sellers details. Lol

If a good/decent price no brainer.
@StSpartina there is very little difference outside of the porting from a 15yr old reels and a new one. As long as it was treated decently you should not have any issues. Back in that time frame there were stainless ball bearings with stainless races used and every now and then those need to be replaced. The current reels run stainless races with ceramic balls. Other than that there are a few very minor things but all perform the same. Also, 15 years isn’t really that old for them, That was around the time The Signature came out. For these reels it will be more so how they are treated. I did see one the other day that was in the worst shape and a quick main gear/drag replacement and cleaning, it was back to feeling new. I still have mine Everglades purchased new in 1998, you would never know it.
Get it - you can get replacement parts and service it yourself. And it has the best incoming and outgoing drag sound ever made.
Do it. I have a tibor backcountry light, evergaldes, and riptide. All black 1st gen round porting and they’re excellent. My next will be a black pacific round porting ( if someone has one, pm me ).
I need to sell a everglades silver and riptide blue, both 2024s. If you’re interested PM me. I’d take $1,100 - $1,200 for both + shipping. That said, the 1st gens are great.
As has been said buy them both. Parts can be ordered and repairs done yourself. My first OG Everglades is approaching 30 years. Bought it used, gold frame, black spool, when they were ordered that way. Had never paid retail for a Tibor, till local shop had 45th anniversary edition then a new shop color. It’s an expensive addiction enjoying Tibors.
I sold a mint condition black Gen 1 Pacific to a guy on here a couple of years ago. .
If you do get one…. The next time you completely blow a layup shot at a good fish, you can use that moment to tell the guy on the platform how impressive the reel is instead of getting lashed for lining the quarry!
Also, since you primarily fish the same stuff I do, I would get the Everglades…. But you probably should get both and then sell the Riptide and offset the Glades cost!
One thing I found is the gold color on the originals isn’t as pronounced as the new model gold, the older almost look silver unless you see it in the right light.
Yeah it’s more of a pale champagne. My Everglades is like that. Sometimes I have to look at it twice thinking maybe it is silver😂
The gold is Classy not trashy!
Y’all just need to stop with these Tibor posts!!
My budget can’t stand it..
.
Went to the “fancy” outdoor store over the weekend and may or may not have left some drool spots on the case that houses the Tibors. That black Everglades is one sexy piece of Aluminum.
