My old (whatever make it is??) steering cylinder is starting to leak. Only thing I can say is that it is a knockoff of a Seastar cylinder. It’s too old to find parts to rebuild and the fittings are dated as well. My question is, do I really need a cylinder rated to 300hp on a 75hp outboard? Seems a little over kill in my opinion. Will the Baystar model work just as well?

I use the Baystar up to the rating. I had one on a 90hp 4st merc and it works fine. I’m running a baystar on an F70 now and it is fine. Do pay attention to manufacturers limitation because of the big prop lower units like the command thrust merc. You definitely want to use the bigger steering units on those.
