Native SUV 14 vs Copperhead

I posted this topic on microskiff but I didn’t get much traction. I guess the cool kids moved to this lunch table.

I’m considering moving on from my Ankona native suv 14 to something a little larger. For context, I live in Miami now but potentially moving to SC for work in the next year or so.

Any thoughts or other hulls I should look into? Am I getting enough of an upgrade out of the switch to a copperhead to make it worthwhile considering I know my native is reliable and set up just the way I want it?

Any thoughts on a fair market value for my Native SUV 14? It’s a 2019 with a 2023 Yamaha f25. Platform, trolling motor, simrad, the works without a live well.

What would you like to get out of the new boat that the native doesnt offer?
I was torn between SUV , heron 16 and the cayanne. I chose the Heron because i wanted to be able to go out of the inlet when weather permits.

Also what kind of fishing do you do/want to do?

Also also the copperhead is no longer in production fyi

@Robby1112 I’ll second what @Vagabondfishing said. What is it you want/expect that the SUV14 isn’t getting you?

P.S. Welcome to SkiffHQ BTW!

I’ve come across a couple on marketplace that seem like decent deals. Not in the market to build anything at the moment. I would love a heron but don’t see any prices in the used market that catch my eye.

I’m looking for a little more getup and some more real estate that makes fishing 3 realistic. I know it will still be tight on any skiff in this range but it doesn’t feel possible on the 14. Also, I’m ready to move on from a tiller to a center or side console. This might catch some flak but a tiller isn’t nearly as much fun to drive IMO.

Welcome aboard @Robby1112! Yeah, the corporate owned ms site cut their own throats. The best of the best now reside here!
And I’m sure they’ll take care of any questions you may have!

Thank you for the warm welcomes. Looking forward to learning from the anglers/captains on here that have a lot more experience than I do.

It sounds like you have it figured out. A copperhead might be exactly what you need. Where in SC are you looking to possible move to?

I’ve got a couple job interviews in the Charleston area coming up. Don’t know much about SC but it seems like a fishy place to live that’s much more my speed compared to Miami. Any recommendations on neighborhoods to look into for apartments if all goes to plan?

Yeah but SC doesn’t have latinas that call you Papi!

The Copperhead is a nice boat, there is a dude that fishes one out of James city, I have met him in a couple of back country areas, very distinctive, and performs well from looking on the outside. I think it would be a step up from your 14.

Having only moved here from South Florida a little over a year ago I’m not really the best person to ask about where to live. I work in North Charleston but live in Summerville.

Check out some of the posts in the reports section. I will say this, it’ll reset your ego. lol. Nothing like 6-7’ of tide change to pucker up your sphincter if you are not use to the boat ramps.

Welcome aboard @Robby1112 Before you pull the trigger, it might help to book a charter with a guide in the area you’ll be to see how they fish and what they are running. @BrownDog would be a good one to consult.

Welcome over here an potentially to the area.

If I can help with anything feel free to shoot a message.

As for boats…. Bring your current boat up here and fish it for a bit. See what your style gravitates to before committing to a change. Thereare a number of different ways and species to target.

Nothing to add, other than welcome aboard.

Sound advice right there! Oh, and welcome aboard. Glad you found us.

One option, sell the SUV14 and then use that money to hire guides… There have been days on the water that the though… if I sell my Egret, I could fish X number of times with a guide… LOL

Thanks all for the welcome. Going to check out a copperhead this weekend. The skiff bug has got me by the nuts

A pirate walks into a bar with a big ship steering wheel on the front of his pants. The bartender says hey you have a big ship steering wheel on the front of your pants. The pirate says “Aye! and it’s driving me nuts!” :man_facepalming:.

Ok I’ll stop.

I’m not sure a copperhead from suv14 will be a game changer.

The copperhead is still a small boat and I wouldn’t really say it’s a three person board. Could you do it at times yes.

I had an original copperhead before they made some changes in the hull to get rid of the tabs. The original model was better than the newer ones in my opinion from the one I fished. The original was lighter as well.

Pros of copperhead is it poles realy nicely.
Cons: it’s a very wet boat, and it likes to ride very bow down adding to the wetness and it’s not great at taking on rough water.

A lot of people put a 60 on them and I think that’s to much motor as the draft and balance of the skiff would be way better with a 30 or 40. I had an etec 60 on mine so maybe one with a tohatsu 60 to shave some weight would have been ok.

I second the above. New one rides bow down due to design which I did not like for fishing South Florida. Poles and fishes great but can be a little wet. Hatches are notorious for attracting fly line. With 60 and cc it’s 8” boat
