Has anybody towed their skiff from GA or the Carolinas to the Keys? Was it worth it?
Yes and yes. Towed from Charleston to Islamorada. Spent several day on the water with my son and wife. Would not trade it for the world.
Where did you launch?
Second week in November. Now I have to find somebody to go with me.
We stayed at Kon Tiki. They have a private ramp on premises.
Thanks. I’ll book it. Was it easy to find your way around on the water? Fishing areas? Tides?
Yes but… that’s my old stomping grounds. I’d run back into the park from there.
I tow from Colorado to the keys for 2 monthd every April and may. Worth it for me.
Two months in the keys. That’s awesome! I live in Denver….but was in FL for about 15 years and owned several boats and used to fish Big Pine area a good bit. I know how to work both ends of a flats skiff…..just sayin in the event you need some help!
Yup I fish primarily bahia Honda and west to marquesas. Ive spent some time in middle and upper keys but I know lower keys much better.
I’ve done it a few times, and it’s 100% worth it. If I went down there and didn’t bring my boat, I’d be bored and regretting it every day.
Im gonna DM you!
nehrke, I’ll be down there solo. If you’re serious about wanting to fish, send me a PM.
Yes it’s absolutely worth it! I was a part of a group that went every year from 2012-2018. We usually towed my Maverick and my buddies 26 regulator. Occasionally a third boat. We had anywhere from 4- 16 people. Honestly the best way we figured out was leaving at 9PM Friday night. We were usually sitting in the Winn Dixie perking lot in Tavernier by 9AM Saturday. Grab our groceries for the week then get the boats in the water. It was always a blast. You need to do a full week though IMO to make it worth it. There will be some rain and the wind seems to blow way more than it’s calm down there.
Wando, my wife and I are at Kontiki this week, today we drove down to sugarloaf key and launched out of sugarloaf marina. Kontiki gives you options. Tomorrow we will fish afternoon low tides here in Islamorada. It’s definitely fun, but unless you spend a lot of time here to develop knowledge it’s relatively tough fishing. I still think it’s fun, different than my home waters for sure.
Towed from Charleston to key west and big pine key probably 15 times. Absolutely worth it. Just bring a couple extra hubs, spares, floor jack, and impact wrench.
I would not even consider going to the Keys without a boat.
Wow! Thanks for invite. I am headed to MT to fish first week of Nov, so unfortunately no keys for me, but thanks for offer!
Enjoy Montana. I just got back from a Snake and Teton rivers trip. A nice change from the SC marsh fishing.
Kon Tiki is great, we live down the street from it. If it were me I’d book a houseboat at Angler House. You’ll have a ramp, pool & bar pretty much to yourself. Gas pump (rec 90), free ice etc etc. There are zero public ramps since the hurricane…you’ll have to pay if you can find one. Also, if you’re not familiar with the area you should get FMT chip, it will make your life easier and safer. Just to add, I would not trailer a boat on i75 LOL….take the backroads and enjoy the scenery.
