How Many is Too Many

How many fly rods/reels do you have? Do they all get used?

Five rigged rods and reels. A 6, two 8’s, a nine and an eleven. The eight’s get the most use and the eleven the least. A few older fresh water reels in storage.

I’ve got a 6,7,(2)8’s, and a 9 rigged and ready. Not going to discuss backups or stuff sitting on the shelf!

Admittedly too many; 4, 2/5s, 2/6s, 7, 5/8s, 9, 2/10s, 2/11s, 2/12s. Each rod wt has 1 if not 2 designated reels. Many/most of these rods I made. My wife asked me this morning if I use all my reels which include fly, cast, bait, spin. It’s almost embarrassing

Too many. I went a little overboard the last year trying different stuff. The only ones I don’t use are the 10’s but I have taken them aboard with intent to use if the occasion called. I hope to figure out the tarpon thing one day so hopefully they’ll se some use. I use my 2 7s and 6 a lot for fresh and in the salt my 8’s get called on. I have a really nice 9 that I got a smoking deal on that I also use on occasion of its going to be too windy for the 8. I keep different lines on them so I don’t have to be swapping reels or lines. For example I have my working the mangroves rod with a grand slam and my open flats rod with a bonefish plus. I also have a 5pc “travel” rod that I have used on several occasions that I absolutely love.

Still trying to figure out what I like but so far some of the “older” rods are some of my favs.

Three 6wt, two 7wt, two 8wt,two 9wt, two 10wt. Eleven rods four piece for travel and one piece for skiff usually. My favorite now is the new Orvis D 7wt 8’4". The reason is light-weight accurate power for aging muscles and reflexes.

Several other unidentified bamboo and fiberglass, most were gifts. There are probably others. Only 1 10wt has never been used. I make special effort to use each rod.

I just built a rod rack that holds 9 rods…. I would always want to practice but didn’t want to assemble then disassemble- thus the rack.
I have 9 full outfits plus one bamboo rod not on the rack… and 7 spare reels (og Tibors that are too nice to bounce around in the boat deck).

I need a 2 wt and a 4 wt.
Also need a OG Pacific to round out my Tibor itch.

1 12wt coming in the mail this week… Then I have to buy a reel for it.

And I am constantly buying, selling, and trading gear as well

It’s a disease. I bet there’s a 12 step program for people like us🙄

I’m a user not a hoarder. 2wt, 3wt, 3wt euro, 5wt, 6wt, 7wt, 2 8wts, and a 10wt. Been a lot of switch up in that quiver over the years, but that’s what I stick to for what I do.

Several cheap 5 and 6wts for perch and bass, two 7wt NFC GB, one 8wt Predator, one 8wt NFC GB, one 10wt NFC GB and one 12wt NFC GB. A couple of Abels for the 7wts, a 3-Tand for the Predator and the rest have Tibor round ports. I sold a few of the Tibors and should have kept them but I have “enough” for now. The 7 and 8wts get the most use but if I get a chance I use the 10…haven’t been able to use the 12 yet but now that I have new skiff power I’ll be trying to stake out and catch a Texas tarpon out front before the fall winds hit.

I went from broke damn near everything and had nothing, to:
1-6#
2-8s
1-9#
1-12#

I use all of em except one 8# It’s became my yardcaster/backup.
The 6/8/9 make each trip, with the 8# getting the most use.

I thought I had some issues..and I do, but man some of y’all…:joy:

There’s no such thing as too many. The only freshwater fishing I do is for smallmouth and stripers or I’d have more smaller rods for trout.

2-6wt
3-7wt
2-8wt
