When I faired my Conchfish I wish I would have applied once, cried once. I put the fairing on pretty thin and in spots would have to add more and sand again.
Looks amazing @Outearly ! I think if I ever get to the point that I can build my own boat, I’m just gonna be happy if the thing floats. The work that I see on here to sand, fair sand, and sand again to get that perfect new boat shine is amazing commitment.! Keep going!
Looks awesome. How did you set the stantions. Did you just add 2 inches inbetween each or did you add a whole stantion. If so where would be the optimal place to insert. Thanks
Nah you answered it. I got it figured out. Thanks for the reply. You purchased the 17.5. Others have stretched out the 16 in the two methods I stated above. Looks great. I’m debating on starting one.
Makes looking at all boats a little more interesting because you can see the common elements, how builders and designers handled some of those elements in different ways.
I also have deep respect for the imagination of Chris Morejohn, being able to visualize a finished product and draw up plans to get there.
I asked the same question, and did some research before I started.
What I heard from others was mid-teens on hard costs.
I honestly think- trying to be realistic- that I will be in the low to mid-twenties, that’s including a new motor and trailer as well as some swag numbers on items like a poling platform, casting platform, and some of the rigging. I also rented a pretty big storage unit, as my space at home just wouldn’t work.
I think some of the more experienced builders can chime in and give you their range.
It’s easy to see that it’s likely more cost effective to buy a used skiff and go fishing, but… I really wanted to try this.
@Outearly Thanks for this post thread! Great work! When you apply the fairing putty the first time, you’ll think you have enough on. Nope. There will always be some low spots in the first application and even in the second. This part is back breaking and dusty. But when you have it shaped, you’ll be really proud of what you’ve done.
Last time I priced one out, it was in 7-8k in the hull only. No rigging or trailer. Not sure if that still holds today, as it’s been a year or 3 since I ran those numbers.
Regarding the cost of the build…use of epoxy will significantly inflate the budget. Way cheaper to use the polyester vinyl resins. I chose to not have my wife kill because of the toxic fumes and me building in the garage. If you’re gonna play…gotta play smart
