G loomis Crosscurrent GLX 7wt

Who can tell me about this rod? I found a good deal on one I’m considering buying, but have no way of casting it. How does it compare to the asquith 7 and NRX+ 7?

I have an original GLX, not Crosscurrent, though I expect these are similar. Have cast it and the Asquith 7 a lot, and have enough other weights of NRX+ to know how this line of rods behaves.

Asquith and NRX+ are very different. Asquith is relatively soft and very fast. Light and low swing weight. Very responsive. A joy to cast at all but the longest distances.

NRX+ is stiff and moderately fast. Light, but heavier swing weight. What you get for this extra stiffness is the ability to throw very long. It’s the best tool I have found for long casts.

GLX is older technology, but I have only recently accepted the fact that there are several rods today that are noticeably better. Moderately stiff and moderately fast, it is one of the all time best classic rods. The action hits a sweet spot that works for me. The thing that has become apparent is that overall weight and swing weight versus distance potential have improved in today’s top end rods.

Still, one could use a GLX for decades to come and not feel significantly out-gunned. It depends more on what action you like in a rod.

If you don’t buy it, let me know so I can buy it.

the one piece versions are still highly sought after, but I wouldn’t turn down any of the 4-piece models either.

It will cast better than any of us will allow it to. It is a fast rod although not as fast as some more recent models. It is a true 7wt in today’s terms
