Franken-jig?

When I fished with @DBStoots he brought the weirdest jig I had ever seen. Some kind of a cross between a jig and fly with all sorts of accessories. Well Dave caught a few fish on this thing and gave it to me to “rebuild”. I saw it when fresh so I kinda had an idea what it was. It looked a lot like a “meat whistle” with some extra jewelry!

Here’s what I started with…

So I started with the “demo” and striped it down to bare parts. Sharpened the hook and this is what I got…

Next was building it back….
Stole the beads from an old bracelet my daughter had and had the reat of the materials to play with.

Finished product…

Interesting jig. I bet a black and purple
would make a killer tarpon jig. Anyway thought I’d share!

Looks like a Bugg! Products Archive - Buggs Fishing Lures

If you like to tie flies these are fun to tie for conventional fishing, I tie little crabs like this one and use it to sight fish reds when I am solo and dont wanna have to manage a push pole and fly rod at the same time. They work great. Beastie Bugg - Buggs Fishing Lures

What is that keel weight?

That website posted sells them but when I took it apart I was reminded of those sinkers that have that black rubber holder don’t know what they are called…

Heath Hippel (the founder / owner of Buggs Fishing) is an avid fly angler (and an all-around good guy); that’s why his lures are tied like flies. Some of my friends have been using them for fifteen years. He’s a Texan, and his lures are popular here. They work! I keep several of his 1/8 oz. Double Bunnies, Curl Tails, and Beastie Bugs in my light tackle box; when I can’t use the fly rods I’m throwing levelwinds spooled with 6# Ande Backcountry. Those lures are perfect for the light rigs. I want to try his Ratic Shad but I haven’t found any of them in the local shops yet. This thread’s inspired me to order some online tonight. His lures are definitely worth checking out for y’all using conventional gear.

Thank you for posting this @rovster

Now I have a new project which will take a bunch of time and money!

I actually really like the looks of these.

Does anyone know where you can find the Buggs Jig Heads? The Buggs website is all sold out of Redfish jig heads.

Not Bugg’s but several alternatives

Yea I have tied them on basically any jig head - I don’t think it matters too much. I’ve only been able to find white ones before and colored them olive with a sharpie and the reds didn’t seem to mind :joy:

Also there’s a sheepshead fly pattern inspired by these which is funny since these jigs were initially based on flies. Sight cast sells them now - the convict killer
