Don't Quit Your Day Job

I have been loving the “Member Street Cred” thread. After following for a while, it occurred to me that there are a lot of talented and skilled people on here. While more than a few are lucky enough to work in the business of skiffs and/or fishing, the love of which is what brings us all here, most of us do a wide variety of things outside the boundaries of the threads on site.

I thought it would be cool to have a space where we share the stuff we are doing for a living, or other hobbies, while waiting for the moments on the water we all love to share.

Mods- if this is in the wrong spot, feel free to move it.

I am home builder. The homes I share are not my personal home. (Read that again, slower). :expressionless_face:

Here are a few of my favorites:

The one below was actually on my property. I built it for my dad to live in.

Dentist here. Not sure any of you would want to see pics of what I do, but in its own way, it is an artform!

Beautiful homes @Renegade. Won’t be able to afford any of those on my salary

I’ll bet he’d entertain offers. Definitely 8 figures.

These homes look like they’re in Florida @Renegade. I’m a licensed contractor in Florida. If you want to “pass down the torch” I’d love to pick your brain how to get these clients.

I’m in Sarasota.

It’s easy.

Build the very best homes in your region. I mean, virtually flawless.

They’ll find you.

Then learn how to not get taken to the bank by people who can afford to have you erased, while also making them happy.

And try not to make any mistakes. Every mistake will cost you 6 figures.

Easy. So easy. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

No street cred here, especially compared to the majority of guys here. I have been working in process control analytics for the last 40 years, in refineries and petrochemical plants all over the US. I specialize in gas chromatography of hydrocarbon streams in process facilities.

Been fishing for 61 0f 66 years. Always wanted to get seriously into flyfishing, so I have been teaching myself the art of flycasting with some small degree of success. Looking forward to the day all I have to do is go fishing. And fly tying, doing art, and photography. Sad when work gets in the way of doing what we love to do most.

Nice work. I know what you mean when working for the top end.
Here’s my last design, engineer, contractor, train the crew how to build to Dade County code in Grenada a few years back. Client was from Ireland, wanted his pool to be able to float his 10’ draft 65’ sailing yacht. Was largest pool on Grenada at the time at 135,000 gals. Had 30-50 West Indies guys from 7 nations working on it at times. Was a challenge.

I’ve worked for a few home builders in Miami though they can afford the homes they are in now it did take them a little bit to get to that point or several hundred home builds later. I’m sure the ones they build for clients are even more elaborate. What I find they did is purchas a dilapidated home or vacant lot and build a house for themselves, live in that for a few years and then sell it at a nice profit. Rinse and repeat until they eventually build the one they retire in, much like the ones in your photos. Are you designing these homes as well or does each owner pick their own architect and then you build per drawings?

I have made money in real estate. Like your friends, I use income to invest in land.

I’ve been at it for 27 years. Up until about 8 years ago I did only design/build. These days I only work with outside design teams.

@Chris_Morejohn beautiful work! I know the challenges of raising up the craftsmanship of the local vendors as well. It’s the hardest and most rewarding part.

I play boats for a living so I guess my work kind of overlaps with skiff HQ so here’s just some more Boat photos.

But prior hobbies and professions are pretty wide ranging.

Photography: short-lived wasn’t happy doing the editing and sitting in front of a computer and learning Photoshop. Now i just shot with the iPhone

Glass blowing: did this for eight years, South Florida is not the place for it, moved on.

Cycling: mostly road, also road mountain bike, track cycling was my favorite. Too many cars and too many cracked helmets/TBI moved on.

no i was not that good, just went to france for the tour.

Wood working/art

just some cutting boards for xmas presents

Custom wood spear guns: really enjoyed this never turned it into a profitable business. My workplace was my father’s prior Shop, which went under so I lost access to an area to work and tools ended up designing account that I could fabricate at my house, but stopped pushing when it became time for injection molding. Something I want to get back into but my time is spent on what I’m currently doing.

Free diving/spearfishing: I was in to to this pretty big but lifestyle changes reduced my opportunities on water and the loss of a buddy with a shallow water Blackout slowed this down. I’ll still free Dive with specific people that have specific training.

Triathlon: this was short-lived, forget the swimming and running I just kept cycling.

Hunting specifically bow hunting: living in Miami is not the best place for this, but when I can, I’ll chase game.

These days my gig is Handyman work, which isn’t necessarily impressive, but it is somewhat rewarding at times. Meeting different folks, being able to address issues that they need and such.
My passion has always been Motorcycles though, as well as cars/trucks. Here’s a few projects over the years.

My old Pickup. A fun fact about this one, was my wife and It took from the blue version pictured to the finished version in 5 days. Along with all new interior as well.

XB9 Buell. Our shared bike. This is a super fun bike, basically a 100hp sportster engine tucked into a 300lb frame. Not crotch rocket fast, but fast enough, and nimble as heck.

My wife’s ride.

My old girl. This one started life as a 1983 FLT, Shovelhead. She’s been with me a long time, and has seen many transformations over the years. I tell folks she’s my Johnny Cash bike, the old Psycho Billy Cadillac. The only thing left from 1983 is the frame. Fun fact for any of you Harley guys. 1980-2006 FLTs can be interchanged with damn near every part on the MC.

My Old 1928 Indian Scout. This one has a long storied history, but has been in the family for almost 40 years, in boxes. I finally got it together and running back in 13. Yes, as pictured, it’s a running and rideable Motorcycle.

This was a full custom bike build I did for a customer back in 06-07, unfortunately I don’t have a lot of pics of it, but I got a feature on Custom Cycle Controls website. Pictured on it, was a brother from another mother that’s no longer with us, and he was also the painter. His airbrush skills were mind boggling, as he was beyond talented and someone I miss greatly.

Now a few from my day job.

Awesome! Cool stuff.

I’m a big bow hunter myself, but as you said, it’s tough living in Fl.

This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping to see in this thread. Thanks for sharing!

I think handyman work is impressive. It requires a WIDE skill set. And the mechanical work is super impressive.

I don’t ride much but I have always loved the lines of a motorcycle.

Great post! Thanks for sharing!

The one thing I enjoy about the Handyman gig, is the variety. I could literally be laying flooring today and changing ceiling fans tomorrow. Ya just never know what each phone call may bring.
I’m also a bow hunter myself, but I these days I’m more of a backyard target shooter. I really just enjoy slinging arrows. It’s right up there with fly casting for me.

I’ve worked for in the new residential construction world since 2008. I made the wonderful decision to get a Construction Management degree and graduated in the worst time possible. I Always wanted to build custom beach homes, and never wanted to work on the “cookie cutter” homes. Well i’ve worked for ever major cookie cutter builder but I’m able to provide for my family and do something I enjoy.

My wife says i’m the most interested man in the world, but @Brandon-Beers might have me beat. Fishing is a given, but i love woodworking, mountain biking, road cycling, sim racing, working on cars, off roading, all things Porsche.
