I get it! I’m a “2 out of 3” weather person. I can handle rain, cold, or wind…individually. But don’t give me 2 out of 3. Don’t give me wind and cold, wind and rain, or rain and cold. And if it a windy, rainy, cold day, I’m staying in the house. The older I get…
I spent a January completely alone in the middle of Maine in an uninsulated summer cabin. It got to -30. Tons of snow. I had to shovel the roof. The cabin next to where I was roof collapsed. The cabin had a wood stove and at the time while I used it I didn’t know how to operate a damper so it just burnt quick and I would sit next to the stove to get warmth. I cut wood with a hand saw and ax every day. This was a college elective I created. I read a bunch of books, Ram Dass “Be Here Now Now Be Here”, Emerson, Jefferson’s “Notes on Virginia” I set snares for snowshoes rabbits and caught trout ice fishing. The cabin was on a large lake. I did bring some staples and snowshoes. I slept under a hoard of down blankets and every morning at daybreak I would run to the stove and set the kindling I had arranged next to it the night before. The stove would go out every night. Light it and then take a shot of whiskey. It was that cold and jump back into bed for about 30 minutes to let the stove heat up. I kept a journal which was my report to my professor. It was a great experience. A bit nippy!
Yeah that two out three nonsense and I’m going back to the barn. They can get a round bale from the cab of the truck.
@7wt Best experiences are the least comfortable ones.
Someone once said
“The world offers you comfort. You were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.” No greatness ever came from comfort.
And @Slhpoc72 you have my respect!
@7wt just wow.. My younger brain says hell yeah, my older brain says no thank you. ![]()
Go to Waco. Best park so far. They have Super brand rentals on site which you will want to use (end section is shallow)
My sister and I took 2 nieces on a canoe trip down the Suwannee about 15 ys ago during a rainy cold front. We were so miserable. It has become an epic memory of ours.
Yes, you are correct. Leaving for Pine Island end of December!
