Check your phone setting - location data

I am processing a few pics for a forum member…

I was fiddling with Lightroom and I found this as I was importing his pics.

All the BS about spot locations, yet, many do not know what your phone settings are giving away…

Turn of geolocation if you want to hide your secret spots

Went to your most recent fishing report… MIME data claims this is the GPS location of those fish you caught…

Not many secrets left. Technology has changed the game.

Recently read this book. I highly recommend it. Datasets by these companies

  • CoreLogic, Acxiom, Cuebiq, SafeGraph

Sell your data when you allow apps permission to see where you are ie tide app weather etc if you read this you will see just how precise your location can be narrowed down to.

One of the myriad of settings I went through when launching SkiffHQ was to strip mime data from images that users upload to the site. :call_me_hand:

Thanks. Didn’t know it was a thing. Makes you wonder what other things are being broadcast by our phones…

Conspiracy theorists have been ahead of the game for generations…

Everything we do is monitored, your phone is listening to you and so are all of your smart devices. I’ve been having a conversation about a certain movie or show with my wife and when we turn the TV on the “Recommended for you” list was the exact movie or show and the others are similar. Targeted marketing…data collection…artificial intelligence.

@anon49879493 was referring to me. I know Dino knows all the spots in the glades so I was OK sending him pics of dink fish and where I caught them. Anyone else would have got a screenshot or now I know how to turn it off!

FWIW, I like the location on because I can always go back and check exactly where I caught it if I want to add that spot to my GPS, or just want to solidify it in my brain.

There are several great use cases for having GEO tag data available. But it’s also good to know how to turn it off if you need/want. Also I like many others sometime forget to do simple things, so that’s why I turned on the option to have the forum software strip this data while users upload their images to the forum.

Interesting. Now this I was not aware of. I always assumed the geo location was lost when “uploading” an image. I did know it was attached when sending pics via text.

I’m pretty loose with sharing info on spots with people I know or trust, but that circle is very small. Maybe 3 people that could even put that info to use…

You mean I’ve been wasting my time inserting bogus coordinates in all my hero shots?!? Every one of them 100 yards on the other side a lower-unit-removing pillar of limestone called Potlicker Rock…

“Yeah, dude, don’t follow that guy, bad things will happen…”
