Caye Caulker Belize?

First trip to Belize with the wife and kids (12 and 15) this January. Fishing is not a priority, but I’ll be bringing some rods. Any thoughts on this island? The wife and daughter need a few amenities, and I just want the kids to be safe.

Welcome aboard Captain! Glad to have you. My experiences with Belize have been on the atoll, so can’t help you with your query. But there are plenty of members who have lots more time in-country so hopefully they will chime in. @coconutgroves maybe?

Welcome Capt.. Enjoy your trip :+1:

Welcome @CaptGreggMcKee - Are you thinking about hiring a guide or doing some DIY fishing?

Enjoy your trip @CaptGreggMcKee

If you do pick up some fishing, reach out to Haywood @ Angler’s Abroad

I’ve also heard good things about the guys @ Chasin Tail

Self guided is a bit challenging there, but you can get a kayak and head to the island to the north and go up the west side. Unless there is a front, that will be your leeward side.

People also fish in the cut between the islands there, but there is a good amount of traffic between that cut during the day.

Take the family on a snorkeling trip over to Hol Chan. That’s a pretty cool area - head off to the deeper ledges around there and free dive to see schools of tarpon. Ask the guide on the boat where the drop off is. It’s safe and the tarpon can be stacked there. It’s a preserve - no fishing.

Caye Caulker is primarily a back packers and rastafarian island. Walking through town, which is small, will always have reggae music playing and a certain smell in the air…..

Have fun!

Thanks. That smell in the air is something I’d rather avoid, especially with the kids in tow. This is a birthday trip for my wife and daughter, so fishing is low on the priority list. I’ll make some time for it but it’s all about them. We lived in the Caribbean for five years and rustic is fine, but the girls will want good restaurants and super clean sheets. I’ll take a closer look but welcome any other suggestions.

Welcome @CaptGreggMcKee.

My girlfriend and I did a trip to Caye Caulker for a week last August. It was perfect for what we were looking for- a couple days of guided fishing, snorkeling trips, sunset sails, great food, and plenty of nightlife. As @coconutgroves said, Hol Chan is unreal, and I may have enjoyed going there even more than fishing.

Something to keep in mind, Caye Caulker is not exactly “beachy”. If the girls are expecting to relax on a sandy beach, you may want to look elsewhere. Most of the shoreline around Caye Caulker has a very grassy bottom- the bonefish love it, but they may not. Pretty much the opposite of the places I’ve been in the USVI’s and BVI’s
