I have a 9/10 fly reel I got from Hong Kong. It’s been great but the other day I was fly fishing and my inner spool fell off. So I opened it up and found the lever was off. It fits on a knob, so I put the lever on that knob and tapped with a tiny screw driver but it kept coming off. So I’m planning on changing to my 10/11 SA reel that won’t break
I was thinking of a way to lock the bar with glue but I can get it to stay put. I’m also up for suggestions on how to lock the reel on the frame
Sorry, not much help on how to fix it.
That said, what are you fishing for?
My 9/10 size reels run the risk of tangling w bigger critters- so I want a quality reel for that size fish.
Thanks man, I’ve been fishing for Large Mouth and Grass Carp
My Behemoth and Fin-Nor can handle the big stuff
So the lever fits in a groove and that’s what keeps the spool “locked” on?
Is it possible to tap threads for a small screw?
Maybe a few drops of Epoxy over the lever.
If the lever coming off the post is the issue, center punch the post to widen out.
Just spitballing a few ideas.
Does the lever hold it on or does the end of the wire clip hold on by falling into a groove?
Chip
Thank you @MikeCockman I thought of using a punch to keep that lever on or putting something over the shaft that the spool sits on
Looks like it’s aluminum, just start up the TIG welder and weld that sucker in place. Seriously, I’d look to jam something to push it against the spindle. If you have a 3d printer I’d say design a half moon shaped plastic piece that with a groove on the flat side of it to fit that lever and a slight press fit to push it down into that spot once on the lever.
If I’m understanding this correctly, the silver lever fits into a groove on the spool shaft that keeps it in place.
Pull the silver lever forward and JB weld the backside in place so it can’t fall back and release the spoolh. Spool won’t be able to be removed in the future though.
The real/best resolution is to trash and replace.
Did you “fix” it?
Is it a lever or just there to hold the spool in place?
Hitting it hard enough to mushroom it could damage something else.
Glue… doubt it would last.
A spot of silver solder might work if it leaves enough room to get the cap/cover back on. Can file the solder down if too much.
If the cap/cover is screwed on that would make for other possibilities.
Round file… that’s how you deal with this problem, unfortunately. All of us at one time or another have come into possession of an off-brand cheap reel - that inevitably breaks on you. No factory support, no reel schematic, no source of parts to repair it. Frustrating… Much better to buy a reel that you can actually get parts for. Can’t afford the price of a new reel? Look for a used one in good condition (everything works - but it looks rough on the outside…).
This advice is coming from a guy who was taught, all those years ago, to repair reels at the first shop I ever worked for - long before I took up fly fishing… That was back in 1973 - and that hard lesson was reinforced every time I thought that a cheap off-brand reel was a good idea (I’m a slow learner…).
Hope this helps
It appears that the spring that is intended to push the lever into the slot in the shaft is not installed correctly. It is on the left in the picture. It should be on the right between the wall of the large recess and the lever.
The hole in the lever should also go over the upper pin. I expect the cover is what is supposed to keep the lever from coming off the pin.
Another possible issue is that you may have tapped the pin in too far, so that it cannot hold the lever. If so, pull the pin out and reinsert it so that it extends up to at least the thickness of the lever.
Thanks man I have plenty of fly reels. Yes this one is a piece of carp but it’s light weight has a good drag and is CNC
Yes the people in Hong Kong just want to send me a new reel at my cost
I decided to turn the lever around. It seemed to go against the shaft better but it didn’t fit on the post as good so I thought about wrapping thread around the shaft. Then I thought I’d Super glue it in place but couldn’t get the top off the bottle so I used Tear Mender instead. I jus went to check it. Found the reel wouldn’t seat so I took if off and found Tear Mender around the shaft. I removed it and the reel seated. Then I pushed the bar to the shaft and it seemed to hold, it probably won’t but I’m taking it fishing this weekend
You need to install the spring so that is presses the lever into the shaft, otherwise the spool is likely to come loose.
It was a crappy spring and fell on the carpet and I haven’t found it yet. It was a small u shaped wire
Thanks for your help
Try a strong magnet, sweep it over the rug over and over again.
I got down on my knees with strong light and found it
