Big Bend 9-12

Unfortunately not much to post. Fishy Friday this week was tough, thanks to conditions.

Tide was high at 5:30a 4.1’ Falling to 1.9’ , however that was driven by a 20mph wind that wasn’t in the forecast, resulting in a very large Neg tide. The wind actually started out very light, but once the tide started to slack off, it really ramped up and changed directions, making everything a little more difficult.

Water clarity is still very dark, and with the wind howling, visibility was next to nothing. I did find some fish, and had several go for the fly only to spook at the last second because they’d see the boat. All my shots were literally 10-15’ from the boat. To make matters worse they were holding in deeper water. The flat I was working, has a trough that borders it, and with the entire flat dry, they were hanging out in that deeper water. The other thing was, in this trough, the water is about 2’ deep above the grass, with another 1-2’ of grass below. So when they’d spook they would literally just sink into the grass and disappear. Pretty cool to witness, but really made hooking up with a light fly difficult. At any rate that’s why’s it’s called fishing and not catching. Ended the day with nothing but a pinfish.

Couple other cool experiences from the day though. As I was drifting, looking for for something to throw a fly at, thinking about Charlie Kirk and otherwise just appreciating the day, a small flock of pelicans flew over, 6 in a v formation probably no more than 20’ above me. So close you could hear their wings, and see every detail. It just made what was a fairly somber moment a lil easier to digest.

Then on the way back to ramp, what I can only guess to be a pair of Manatees, the water just explodes. It was only about 3.5’ deep, as they were on top of the dredge pile next to the channel, and outta no where it’s two massive explosions, water flying 10-15’ into the air. Just crazy. I came off plane and circled around to see if I could verify, but never was able to lay eyes on them.
