I had one day in between work and travel, the tide was -5” at 08:45 where I was going to target these reds in some nice grass. I launched solo, my plan was to work the flats as the tide started coming in, so I targeted trout in an oyster bar with a deep pass until the water was above 6” on the flat (I use my vortex binos and a landmark to check the depth, so I had about an hour of trout fishing). The big girls were eating bait, as I swung a minnow by the deep pass surrounded by two shallow oyster bars. Enjoyed catching some nice chubbies!
When the water started flowing on to the flats, I floated on and started seeing tails. The only problem is they scoffed at my offerings, it was tough solo due to how shallow it was. Here in my area the grass is thick and they are buried in the grass eating, so you have to get them to lift their head to eat! I hooked a nice one, but he dragged so much grass he broke me off!
After getting my rear handed by the Red Drum, I moved to some creeks, and was able to do battle with a fairly large Tarpon that defeated me in close mangrove quarters, the fight of a Tarpon is so addicting!
I did catch a few nice big Snook as they are getting back into the mangroves for winter!
Great day, and now I’m back at work till the end of Nov! I do have the first two weeks in Dec planned for battle with those Drum!
The tail is on the upper left of the next pic
Everglades Special Snūke!
