Banana river skiff rebuild TX

Going to try to post as much of the story as I did on another site. So give me some time to rewrite it all.

A friend of mine scooped up this old Banana river skiff from Florida years ago and started working on it. He started some transom work and laying the foam on the core floor. We ended up making a trade. i rebuilt one of Gheenoes and he gave me the BRS and materials. I was super excited about it.

I ended up deciding to tear it all back down to the bare hull cause i noticed the floor was not perfectly flat.

If you still have access to MS you can copy and paste text instead of typing it all again!

While pulling out the divinycell i noticed the majority of it was not glued down.

Though my plan was to run my 25hp 2 stroke merc I did find a period correct 1980 merc 50 jet tiller off marketplace! I ended up selling it since the 25hp was perfect for it. the Jet was also much Heavier and i wanted this boat to be light.

Old transom wasnt flat

Mocked up the new with coosa

Had plenty of leftover divinycell and Gurit Kerndyne foam from Johnson fiberglass here in Houston. Love that stuff.

Had a buddy scoop up some platforms from Florida and bring them back. I ended up using an old gladeskiff platform.

First mockup of the bulkheads. i ended up changing it a little later.

Glued in

Repaired some gunnel damage

Shaped up some rod holders

My plan for paint was Fighting lady yellow on bottom and top. Cream inside. Gator glide on bottom.

Then we got it flipped.

Lots of repairs and holes to fix along with a nose job. Theres also a whole thick layer of house paint that needs to be removed.

My new Bosch died which set me back a few days

Went with Pettit for paint

When I ripped the old coosa transom off is took alo of glass with it so I fixed that.

Also cut down all strakes.
Front of the boat seems to have had a repair done. So I’ll need to reshape it a bit.

New Sander!

Layers of house paint was a nightmare to sand off

Finally got all layers of paint off. Had to use the DA sander and even that struggled. I’m going to take 5 inch sander and get everything smoothed out next. Then filler. Crazy how much I sanded off. There was so much filler over paint for no reason. After getting all of it off the hull ended up being in decent shape.

Look at my driveway!

Finished shaping the nose.
The radius on the sides were a PITA! I put alot of groves sanding all the paint off. 3rd coat of fairing went on last night. I had to block sand this second coat. And 3rd. Love how easy the total boat fairing compared is to work with though.

Got it faired out.

Primer layed

First coat sprayed

Last coat down. It dries alot more of a tan color but i noticed as i wet sanded between coats yhe yellow comes back. I did a quick cut and buff in one section today and it’s gunna shine up real good and the yellow will pop once it’s all cut and buffed.

Then i layed down the gator glide.

Really loving this Pettit paint.
Finished wetsanding and buffing last night.

Then we flipped it and threw it in the pool.

I wasn’t happy with my butchered bulkhead and wanted more cockpit space. For it being a 16ft boat the deck was to big and I just wanted more space. So I cut it out and I’m making a new one. Possible making the opening slightly smaller too

Finished up the new bulkhead. Also added a layer of glass to the hull up front and will add glass to the hull as I work my way to the back of the boat.

Got the holes drilled and some paint applied so I can put the rod tubes in.

had a boring late night in the garage and mocked up a rough deck. Cockpit isn’t shaped yet but will be as open as I can make it.

Was going to to infuse this fly somewhere in the buildafter i cuaght my PB red with it but ended up sucking it into the vacuum and it was long gone :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Added some new glass to the gunnels for a little extra strength. Finished glassing the rod holders and supports. They’ll be smoothed out and faired soon.

Kinda working in sections (front middle back) and very close to finishing the front.
First round of fairing was layed down and partially sanded. Very happy with how smooth its looking so far.

All this work shaping and sanding by hand paid off. Really happy with how it’s turning out. Especially the rod holders and bulkhead openings. This is just the first couple two layers of primer. Next I’ll finish the rear of the boat and lay final paint/nonskid. Going with off white inside

Almost done with the hull and ready for the cap to be built.
The sponsons were uneven after flattening the floor of the boat so I added a bunch of layers of 1708 where needed.
Interior paint and nonskid will be next. Tomorrow I’ll be adding the drain plug and tied downs. Paint will be this week.

Sponsons needed alot of work. I added more glass in a few areas and tabbed the transom in a little better after this pic

Didnt plan on laying nonskid first but it got to late last night to spray the first coat so I applied the nonskid

I used off white pettit paint mixed with boat builder central nonskid additive that Simsknives had left over from his project and was nice enough to let me have it. It came out looking really good and was very easy to apply. I will be spraying two more layers of paint on top which will make the texture perfect.

Started running pipe for the gas line up front and some electrical.
Randomly found some color matched drain mats on Amazon. They turned out wayy better than expected!

Ive had this big platform ive been using as a saw horse for the last year. Chopped it up today and going to blast the paint off. Then ill be polishing it.

Spent some time polishing. Still needs a little more but looks much better than before. Had to fill and sand alot of Knicks and scratches

Got the cap shaped up enough to glass the underside. I hate how thirsty the divinycell mixed with the 1708 was. But i had 1708 laying around so i decided to use it.
Going to add some coosa supports for the platforms also. Ignore the beercans on the ground. I stayed up real late this past weekend knocking it out. I really need to take a break and organize/clean my garage. Its disgusting as you can see.

Mockup before glass

i worked in 15oz batches. ended up going through 1.5 gallons.

Got the underside all finished with platform supports and some more support incase i ever decide on a trolling motor.

flipped it back over to make sure everything lines up and to mark where accessories will line up. I stared at this for a while.

Absolutely love these pictures. You’re work, fast and beautiful! Keepem coming :+1:

hoping to glue the cap down by this weekend.
Ordering the rub rail today and as much as i wanted an SS rail the Tessil mare r30 seems hard to beat for the price. I think ill go with that with SS endcaps.
Still struggling to find a decent trailer that will fit properly. May just have to rebuild the old heavy one.

Found an older Mclain trailer for cheap. Was a little big but i Made it work. Refresh of it is later on.

Got the cap bonded this past weekend. Used thickened epoxy and csm fibers. It aint going anywhere. Goingf to shape the edges then prep the inner and outer flanges.

Got the transom area glassed around some edges

Made a few templates for some cooler grab bars. Will be polished aluminum with a nice wood backrest.

Made a tiller extension

Backrest cut out

Almost ready for glass on top. Adding another layer of 1708 on the flange tonight with a small heater running in the garage. Been having to keep my resin inside the house to stay warm or else it gets to thick.

Took me 5 hours but the cap is finally glassed. Glad thats over with

Well i weighed the hull today and its a bit heavier than expected but not terrible. I still think my 25hp will push it fine. I also trimmed the outer flange a bit shorter than i should have but the rub rail will help a little bit there. Other than that the boat feels extremely solid all around. Id say a little over built and that where the weight was added.

Nonskid came out great and paint sprayed well. If its dry enough ill be adding the rub rail tonight.

Heres a pic before the platforms were mounted.

Cooler back rest isnt done yet and i still need to trim the cockpit flange a bit to even it out.

Push pole holders installed.

First test run. I was so happy after this i teared up.

Took the crew out last weekend and they loved it. So gladd i opened up the cockpit a bit more cause there was plenty of space. i need to get a small stakeout pole for when we park the boat cause it just kept floating away. Crazy how skinny this boat floats when empty haha.

Finished up the back rest finally. Its pretty dirty in this pic.

I also made a simple jackplate I dont have pictured

These are all older pics. I will update with current ones and some more updates ive done to it

After getting it on the wate i noticed a bow steer issue. This was caused by not flattening the floor enough. I thought i did but just not enough. So over 25mph it would get a little scary. After some jackplate adjustments and making a small hydrofoil it got alot better. with my 25hp merc i cruise at 27mph fully loaded with 2 people. Only thing i can see making it better is if i got a long shaft motor with trim and tilt. I do not currently run a battery either and would like to keep it that way.

This month i refurbished the trailer and it looks much better.

I laughed out loud at the fly story. Sorry you lost it, but still funny.

This is awesome brother! I love the detail. I laughed out loud about the fly in the vacuum, that’s something I’d to too…as a matter of fact I vacuumed up my son’s fly he caught his first bass on and I had big plans for it!

Wow! Fine work there!
