Awesome sounder pics

Got into a school of probably 20 tarpon this morning. 30-40lbers. They were bombing down deep in a channel then coming up and rolling. Schools of jacks running the edges. I never look too much at my sounder but I was casting from aft and it caught my eye… thought these views were super cool. This is the basic Simrad 3 in 1 and a cheapo thru hull on the left.

What are your favorite images you sounder has printed??

You can definitely tell those are tarpon - that’s pretty cool.

What setup are you running for your sounder? Your detail is better than what I’ve seen so far on mine.

I recently got the Active 3 in 1 on my NSS Evo3s and am still setting it up on my center console. I mostly use it in fresh water lakes - I do not have a sounder on my Whipray since I am in pretty shallow water nearly all the time on the Texas coast.

same as yours. NSS Evo3 to the Active 3-1. I left the 3-1 settings stock - or auto or whatever Simrad calls it. I only monkeyed with thru hole chirp (left). I was on the trolling motor so you can see the noise on the chirp…sensitivity needed to be dialed down a lot.

Water quality was crap today, I bet the freshwater view is even better.

Here’s a cheap GO unit with the 3-1 as comparison

Tarpon as well

I don’t even know what I’m looking at on the rare occasion when I turn it on! But then, I’m typically in shallow water where the technology doesn’t work.

Technology is awesome when it works right. The pic @BrownDog posted clearly shows the echo shadow created. Great shots from both of you.

I don’t have sidesscan or down imaging but here are tarpon on traditional sonar. These are on a deep edge and drop off of some flats where I have been catching them pushed dup shallow.

While I don’t find the side scan too beneficial for my kind of tarpon fishing, it’s cool to see them show up on the screen. Especially when they think they can sneak past you!

You guys might as well be an advertisement for those units/companies. Those pictures are so clear.

I finally installed the total scan (a 3 in 1) transducer a while back after the GPS lead my astray a few times on depth. I just wanted the depth, maybe water temp, as I typically fish in less then 3ft. That said, I’ve played with it in deeper waters, tried all the settings, and never got nearly the picture you guys are getting. I’ve got an older Lowrance Elite-9ti, so that might be part of it. Not worth an upgrade since I don’t look at it much.

@rovster posted some setup info on the last site that helped me at least get some of the right things enabled. I swear a secret decoder ring is needed for some of the Simrad setup, and I am a tech guy.

I made a post that links to the Simrad setup page that may help others make sure it is configured correctly:

The lakes here around Austin are still pretty murky from all the flooding, so the quality of the sounder has definitely been affected. It should get better soon - I am looking forward to finding those large bait balls and schools of stripers.
